Area teams ready for districts

The really exciting part of the high school volleyball season is here. But before local teams could look ahead to district tournament play, they had to take care of some final regular season matches last week.

Last Monday saw the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks win two more District 6C East matches when they swept the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds in two matches at home.

CJI won the first match by scores of 25-5, 25-9 and 25-6, getting nine kills and two blocks from Kimberli Ghekiere, while Khloe Kammerzell had 12 aces and a blocks.

In the second match, the Hawks won by scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-12. Peyton Hawks had 20 assists and nine aces, while Elyssa Tempel and Gabby Mangold each had six digs.

CJI wrapped up the regular season with its annual rivalry match with the North Star Knights Tuesday night, but North Star proved to be too much. The Knights beat the Hawks by scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-20 in the regular season finale for both squads.

Sheridan Spicher had three kills, seven digs and three blocks for the Knights, while Peytan King added three kills and three blocks. Ghekiere had five kills and Kylee Vinson served two aces for CJI.

Tuesday night also saw the Chinook Sugarbeeters finish off a perfect regular season with a three-set win over Box Elder, while Big Sandy lost its last match of the season to Centerville. The Miners beat the Pioneers by scores of 25-18, 25-15 and 25-7, with Andrea Rutledge leading Big Sandy with four kills and a block. Jaylyn Cline also had two digs and two blocks.

In the final District 6C East standings, Chinook finished first with a record of 10-0 and will be the top seed at this week’s 6C East tourney. North Star was second at 8-2, CJI was third at 6-4 and Big Sandy and Box Elder tied for fourth at 3-7. Hays-Lodge Pole finished last at 0-10.

The 6C East tourney will be held Thursday and Friday in Chinook with the top three teams advancing to next week’s Northern C Divisional in Conrad. The top two teams in that tournament will advance to the Class C state tournament, Nov. 10-12 in Bozeman.
