Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Beeters, Knights, T-Birds win key games

The first week of February is always exciting in girls high school basketball. And that’s just how it was on the Hi-Line.

The action got going last Tuesday when the North Star Knights secured a big District 9C win in Turner. The nights opened the game on a 16-7 run on their way to a 56-42 victory.

Paij Peterson scored 15 points and Kate Hansen added 12 for the Knights. Sarah Billmayer paced the Tornadoes with eight points in the loss.

Both area Class B teams were in action Tuesday as well, and the Rocky Boy Morning Stars got a much-needed home win over Cut Bank, 71-58. Rocky Boy exploded for 22 points in the first quarter, and never looked back as Jaylynn Mitchell scored 16 points, while Shania Patacsil and Rosie Parker each added 12.

Harlem wasn’t as fortunate Tuesday as the Wildcats lost a 2B game to Wolf Point, 64-46. Kailee Henry and L’Tia Lawrence combined for 30 points in the loss.

Harlem didn’t have any luck bouncing back Thursday either. On the road at Glasgow, the Wildcats fell 60-43. Harlem trailed by just one point at halftime, but the Scotties outscored the Wildcats 37-21 the rest of the way. Henry led Harlem with 12 points.

Box Elder is running away with the 9C standings, and they showed why Thursday night, as the Bears blew out Big Sandy 73-33 in Big Sandy. A 23-5 run in the first stanza was all Box Elder needed to put the game out of reach.

Tia Russell led all scorers with 13 points for Box Elder, while Joelnell Momberg scored 12. Jenna Leader had 12 points for the Pioneers.

Box Elder’s big test then came Friday night against second-place Fort Benton. But the Bears again stood tall, winning on the road 46-36. Box Elder led by eight at halftime, and the Bears’ defense was the difference, as they held the Longhorns to just three points in the third quarter.

Lilly Gopher scored 13 points for the Bears, while Joelnell Momberg added 10. Coya Knack paced Fort Benton with a game-high 14 points.

Friday night was a shakeup night in the 9C as well, as Hays-Lodge Pole upset Turner 60-50 in Hays. The T-Birds started the game on a 16-4 run in their second league victory of the season.

Mulleeah Stiffarm scored 27 points and Rayleigh Kirkaldie added 26 in the big win for HLP. Ella Billmayer, Sarah Billmayer and Rylee Conlan each scored 11 for the Tornadoes.

North Star also won a big rivalry game Friday night, as the Knights went to Chester and beat the Chester-Joplin-Inverness Hawks 49-34. The game was close until the Knights ripped off a 16-6 run in the third period.

Kate Hansen led North Star with 13 points, but Paij Peterson and Payton King each scored 10. The Hawks got 11 points from Kendahl Knapton.

Chinook stepped out of conference play Friday night and renewed an old rivalry with Harlem. But the Wildcats were no match for the Sugarbeeters, who beat their Class B rival 60-41 in Harlem. Brooke Elliot scored 18 points and Erin Pula added 16 for the Beeters. L’Tia Lawrence led the way for Harlem with 14 points.

Saturday night, HLP made a run at a 9C sweep, but the T-Birds couldn’t get past Fort Benton. The game was close through the first quarter with Fort Benton leading 20-16, but the Longhorns finished the half on a 23-10 run, enough for a double-digit win.

Coya Knack scored 16 points, Leah Gannon scored 15, Alia Evans chipped in with 13 and Kaitlyn Bird added 12 in the win for Fort Benton. Rayleigh Kirkaldie scored 23 points for the T-Birds.

Also in the 9C, CJI got back on the winning track with a 47-29 win at home against Big Sandy Saturday night. Kendahl Knapton scored 19 points for Hawks, while Jaylyn Cline had 12 for the Pioneers.

Chinook also made it a weekend sweep by beating Turner 48-37 Saturday night in Chinook.

In District 1B action Saturday night, Rocky Boy’s roller coaster season continued with a 56-39 loss to Choteau. Adrienne Gopher and Rosie Parker each scored 13 points in the loss for the Morning Stars.

This week marks the final week of the regular season for Class B and Class C girls basketball.
