HHS tracksters run to the state meet

The Havre High track teams were in Belgrade over the weekend, competing in the Eastern A Divisional for a chance to qualify for the Class A state track meet.

When it was all said and done, Havre qualified a number of athletes. In the team competition, the Pony girls scored 32 points, finishing seventh. Belgrade won the meet with 112 points, followed by Laurel with 93 and Glendive with 73. Sidney won the boys meet with 120 points. Belgrade was second with 109 and Laurel was third with 102. The Pony boys didn't score any points in the meet.

The Pony girls had some standout performances, but none were more impressive than that of Katie Wirtzberger. The freshman not only finished fifth in both the 200-meter dash (27.64) and the 400 (1:01), but she was also part of the 400-relay team that finished second (51.3) and the team that was fourth in the 1,600 relay (4:24).

"Katie, shocked some people in that 400," HHS head coach John Ita said. "She shocked everybody but us. Also in the 200, we knew that she would compete hard and she sure didn't disappoint. She had a really good meet."

Ireland Coyne was another big contributor for the Pony girls, as she ran on the 400-relay team, but also finished fourth in the 100 hurdles (17.00) and sixth in the 300 hurdles (49.66). Logan Huebsch also stood out with a fourth-place finish in the 300 hurdles (48.73) and ran in the long relay.

"Ireland, she had a nice meet," Ita said. "Logan, she kind of stumbled a little bit on the first hurdle and kind of stumbled again and actually stopped after the second hurdle. She got going again and finished like fourth in her heat, but she didn't make the top 10. But thankfully, she was already qualified for state."

In the distance events, Kaylee Nystrom carried the banner for HHS, as she finished fifth in the 3,200 (12:45) and seventh in the 1,600 (5:40) qualifying for state in both events in the process. Nystrom also ran the 1,600 relay.

Jessa Chvilicek was the other Havre girl running in the 1,600 relay. Chvilicek came into the meet already qualified for state in the 100, but she also made it in the high jump after finishing seventh (4-08). Senior Kristen Nash also threw 105-10 in the discus, to finish fifth, while Loni Waid was sixth in the pole vault (8-06). Caitlyn Terry and Amelia Beard also qualified in the long jump, finishing seventh and eighth respectively. Tayler Marinkovich also earned her way to state with a 10th-place showing in the 200.

"Nash in the discus, good for her," Ita said. "She threw really well and really consistently that day. Our high jumpers didn't have a great day and we were hoping to get more two or three of our triple jumpers into state and that didn't happen, so that was a little disappointing, but again our high jumpers were already qualified and we also got Caitlyn Terry and Amelia Beard in the long jump."

The only individual that finished in the Top 10 on the boys side of things for Havre, was Jacob LaBrie, who earned his way into the state meet with a time of 53.35 in the 400, good enough for eighth place. The 400-relay team (LaBrie, Marc Woronick, Cole Watson and Brandon Shaw) for the boys finished seventh, the 1,600-relay team (LaBrie, Woronick, Austin Jones and Andrew Boucher) wound up eighth.

"We knew that it was going to be a struggle for the boys," Ita said. "We thought as individuals, Jacob LaBrie would make it (to state) in the 400 and he was able to do that. We also thought our relays teams could make it and they did. But I thought one bright spot was Lane Paulson, he PR'd (personal record) in the 800 by a few seconds, so he ran really well. We are also going to give him a look in the long relay, but that 800, which is a good combination of speed and endurance, is just perfect for him."

The Class A state track meet will take place Friday and Saturday in Laurel.
