Tours and barbecue set at NARC Field Day Thursday

Northern Agricultural Research Center has released a full agenda for its annual Field Day, starting Thursday at 3 p.m. at the center, six miles southwest of Havre at Fort Assinniboine.

A full slate of tours is set for the field day, along with honoring the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Commitee’s selection of the 2017 Ag Leader and 2017 Ag Advocate, and presentations by representatives of Montana State University’s Montana Agricultural Experiment Station of which NARC is one unit.

The day starts with registration and refreshments at 3 p.m. and a welcome by NARC Superintendent Darrin Boss, Ph.D.

Four different tours are offered at both 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., giving people the chance to attend two of the tours.

Tour A includes Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, Effects of Seeding Date; Alternative Cropping Systems in the Triangle; Nutrient Management in the Triangle Area; and Cover Crop Selection and Grazing.

Tour B includes Spring Wheat Variety Evaluations and New Variety Development; Durum Breeding, Variety Evaluations and New Variety Development; Pulse Variety Development; and Winter Wheat Variety Evaluations and New Variety Development.

Tour C includes Estrus Synchronization in Beef Cattle; Net Wrap and the Accumulation in the Digestive Tract; Range Beef Cattle Distribution and Supplement Delivery with C-Lock Smart Feed System; and Large Round Bale Hay Storage.

Tour D includes Pulse Crop Root Scanning Technology; Saline Seep Remediation using Compost and AC Saltlander; Precision Agriculture in the Triangle; Unmanned Aerial Vehicles/Research Perspective; and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles/Farmer Perspective.

A free barbecue dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

At the dinner, Boss will speak and make introductions, and the Chamber Agribusiness Committee will present its Ag Leader and Ag Advocate awards.

Also speaking during the barbecue are Montana State Univesrity’s Montana Agriculltural Experiment Station Associate Director Barry Jacobsen, Ph.D., and Charles Boyer, Ph.D., MSU’s vice president of agriculture and dean of MSU’s College of Agriculture.
