Havre Trails sets Long George hike for Sunday

Havre Daily News staff

Havre Trails has invited people to a hike on Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation Sunday, a moderately difficult hike up Long George.

The meeting time is at 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the red picnic table at Bear Paw Lake, or Second Lake. People should turn at the third Bear Paw Lake sign heading south from Havre to the picnic area there. The group will caravan from the parking lot to the trailhead.

High-clearance vehicles are preferred, but carpooling from the meeting place usually is possible.

The hike itself is 4.6-mile round-trip, with a moderate difficulty rating and an elevation gain of 500 feet. The hike is in the middle of the reservation near Parker Canyon. Anyone is welcome to join and can take as much time as needed hiking, Havre Trails said in a notice about the hike.

Dogs are allowed if on a leash and the hiker brings doggy bags; small creek crossings are likely.

The Chippewa Cree Tribal Council and Natural Resources Department have granted

Havre Trails bought a group recreation permit that allows us to hike on the reservation. Individuals can purchase a permit from the Tribal Natural Resources Department by calling Lucilla at 395-4207.
