Myers' hoopsters shine in Las Vegas

LaVon Myers career as head basketball coach at Box Elder high school hasn't really begun yet. But, the now longtime Hi-Line basketball coach led plenty of youths to success this summer.

Meyers took two teams to the biggest youth summer basketball week of the year recently in Las Vegas, competing in the Las Vegas Last Call Gold Tournament and the Las Vegas BigFoot Hoops Classic. Yes, these are the same tournaments basketball fans saw on ESPN's Sportscenter with stars like LaMello Ball, Shareef O'Neal and Zion Williamson.

As for how Myers' teams did, his MT Native Elite 17U squad won a championship in Last Call Gold Tournament. The team won its pool in the BigFoot Hoops Classic, before losing to a tough team from New Zealand in the quarterfinals. The 17U team was composed of Havre's Austin Delarosa and Laz Windy Boy, as well as Chinook's Isaac Bell and Box Elder's Trey Henderson. Others who played on the 17U team included Sunburst's Treyton Pickering, as well as Hays-Lodge Pole's Ryle Foote, along with Shylon Spoonhunter, Julian Glenn and Duncan MacDonald.

Myers also had a 16U squad in Las Vegas. In the Last Call Gold Tournament, the team made it to the semifinals before falling, while they lost in the first round of the BigFoot Classic to a team from Seattle.

The MT Native Elite 16U team was made up of Havre High's Tanner Parsons, along with Fort Benton's Garret Diekhans, Riley Spoonhunter, Rocco McMakin, Latrell Bullchild, Tanner Smith, Tyree Whitcomb, Ethan Runningcrane, Miles Brien and Carsen Mayer.

"These two teams competed at a high level, at the national level," Myers said. "Also, a huge thank you to everyone who helped and supported our fundraisers, and a special thank you to Kevin Oberweiser for helping me coach these young men."

Myers now gets set to begin his first season as head boys coach at Box Elder.
