The Havre High School speech and debate team competed at a talent-laden tournament in Lewistown Saturday, and came away from the Fergus County High School invitational with some success.

Havre public forum debate team Eric Harrison and Xavier Ulano drew a first-round by then won their second debate. The Havre team lost its third debate but still took fourth place at the tournament. Blue Pony public forum team Joram Randolph and Noah Teasley went 1-2 and took seventh.

Havre fielded its largest team of the season so far to compete against teams from powerhouse speech and debate schools including Class A schools like host Fergus, and Belgrade, Billings Central and Laurel high schools.

Head coach Tim Leeds said the Havre speech and debaters did well and received good comments, but no other Ponies made it on stage to receive an award.

Also competing for Havre at the tournament were Johnny Valadez, Kaleb Gardner and LillieAnn Mecklenburg in Lincoln-Douglas debate; Alex Barkus in informative speaking; Jordan Jarman and Tony Antley in impromptu speaking, and Mallory Schaub in dramatic oral interpretation.

Leeds said the team will field its strongest numbers yet this season when it travels to Cut Bank Saturday for the Cut Bank High School invitational.
