Obituary - John Terrance "Terry" Stevenson

John Terrance "Terry" Stevenson, 92, passed July 18, 2023.

Memorial service will be Saturday, July 29, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church in Joplin.

Terry was born to Benn and Madge (Sailor) Stevenson June 26, 1931, in Havre. He was raised in Havre and graduated from Havre High School in 1949. He went to college at the University of Montana for a short time.

He loved to sing and was well known for his beautiful baritone voice. During his lifetime from high school on he was called upon to sing for weddings, funerals and other events.

Terry married Mary Ann Read and they lived in Havre for three years. During this time, Terry and his friend, Lawrence Green, ran Terry and Larry's Enco service station on First Street. He also enlisted in the National Guard.

When Mary Ann's father passed away Terry sold his interest in the service station, and they moved to the Read farm in Inverness and started farming.

While in Inverness, Terry was active on the Inverness school board, Methodist church council, Hill View Saddle Club, the Soil Conservation Board and worked part-time at the local post office.

Terry and Mary Ann had three children, Michael, David, and Leslie, and were on the farm 10 years before moving to the Sailor ranch north of Gildford. The ranch was started in 1898 by Terry's grandfather, Clinton Sailor, and Terry was proud of the fact that it has remained in the family over 125 years.

While living at the ranch, Terry served on several Hill County boards, helped organize the Hill County Scale Association and was a member of Hingham Lutheran Church.

Terry was proud of his children and grandchildren and through the years attended most of their activities including school programs and sports and 4-H doings.

After retiring, Terry and Mary Ann moved to Gildford where they lived for 10 years before moving to the Sweetgrass Lodge tri-plex in Chester.

Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Mary Ann; children, Michael Stevenson of Havre, David (Pauline) Stevenson of Gildford, and Leslie Smith of Rudyard; grandchildren, Deanna (Dave) Telle, Kelsie (Mike) Croston, Darren (Jessica) Stevenson, Blaine Smith, and Robyn (Thad) Burkhartsmeyer; great-grandchildren, Addison and Rilee Croston, Luke, Josie, and Kasey Stevenson, Tristyn and Logan Telle, Christopher and Brook Burkhartsmeyer, and Tucker Smith.
