Blaine County PALA increases access to public lands

Press release

In a joint effort between the Montana Game Warden's Association - MGWA - and Square Butte Grazing Association, a new road culvert has been installed as part of the Spencer Cow Camp Public Access Land Agreement, or PALA.

In the spring of 2023, Square Butte Grazing Association entered into a 10-year PALA agreement with Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks. The PALA provides year-round access through private land to adjacent to Bureau of Land Management Upper Missouri River Breaks Monument lands. That is not only for hunting and fishing but for other out-door recreation opportunities year-round.

The cost of the culvert and its installation was covered through a donation from the Montana Game Wardens Association. MGWA is a non-profit organization consisting of active and retired game wardens and conservation-minded members of the public. More information about MGWA can be found at https://www.montanagamewardensassociation.com .

The Spencer Cow Camp PALA will provide better access to nearly 84,000 acres of BLM lands. The PALA gives public access to the Left Coulee area through Square Butte's private property on Cow Creek in Southern Blaine County.

The BLM Upper Missouri River Breaks Monument travel plan does not allow for open travel on their portion of the Left Coulee trail into the Bullwhacker area. FWP is currently working with the BLM Upper Missouri River Breaks Monument staff to come up with additional access opportunities. Public support for additional public land access can be directed to the BLM Upper Missouri River Breaks Monument at 406-538-1923.

A map and rules for the Spencer Cow Camp PALA can be found on Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks website. https://fwp.mt.gov, and the rules follow below.

Contact the Bureau of Land Management for a copy of their travel plans and maps.
