Fort Benton advances, CJI falls in playoffs

As postseason high school football moves along, the field of teams competing for a state title becomes smaller and smaller. One of those teams is the Fort Benton 8-man football team, who competed against Superior at home this past Saturday in a playoff game.

With a spot in the semifinals on the line, the Fort Benton Longhorns defended their home field with a 44-30 victory over the Superior Bobcats. But the Bobcats made the Longhorns earn their victory.

In the first quarter, Superior took the lead when Jaxson Green threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Lucas Kovalsky. The Longhorns answered when Truman Giese found Cade Ball for a 25-yard touchdown strike, tying the game at 8-8 to end the opening frame.

Superior opened the second quarter with Green throwing a 29-yard touchdown to Gannon Quinlan. The Longhorns responded with a 52-yard touchdown run from Giese and then they took the lead with a four-yard touchdown run from Ball. But Green found Quinlan for a 24-yard touchdown pass to tie the game, 22-22, heading into halftime.

The Longhorns opened the third quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run from Giese to take the lead. Superior answered with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Kovalsky to Phin Cataldo. But Giese closed the third quarter with a 40-yard touchdown run and then an eight-yard touchdown run to give Fort Benton a 44-30 lead heading to the fourth.

Both teams failed to score in the fourth as the Longhorns held on for the win. The Longhorns now advance to the semifinals as they improve their record to 8-2 this season. The Fort Benton 8-man football team will face Fairview on the road this Saturday at 1 p.m.

Froid-Lake 79, CJI 75

The Chester-Joplin-Inverness six-man football team has been one of the hottest teams in the state, winning its past eight games heading into Saturday. But at home, the CJI Hawks could not extend their streak as they lost, 79-75, to Froid-Lake to end the season.

From the jump, it was a shoot-out. The Redhawks took the lead when Joseph Robertson found Mason Dethman for a 29-yard touchdown pass. CJI answered with a 24-yard touchdown run from Nate Nelson, but the Redhawks struck back with an eight-yard touchdown run from Nate Stentoft.

The Hawks responded with a 63-yard touchdown run from Nelson. CJI then closed the first with a 28-yard touchdown run from Nelson, giving the Hawks a 22-16 lead. The Redhawks opened the second with a 49-yard touchdown run from Dethman, but CJI took control through the rest of the half.

On the ensuing kickoff, Nelson returned the kick 75 yards for a touchdown. Wrigley Lalum then got in on the action with a six-yard touchdown and a three-yard score for the Hawks. Nelson added onto the lead with a six-yard touchdown run.

The Redhawks finally answered when Jacob Martensen picked up a fumble and returned it 12 yards for a score, but CJI took a 52-31 lead into halftime. The Hawks opened the third with a 74-yard touchdown run from Nelson to make it a 60-31 game. But the Hawks could not close it out.

The Redhawks began their comeback with Dethman throwing a 21-yard touchdown to Stentoft. Dethman then threw a 51-yard touchdown to Daniel Forizs to make it a 60-47 game heading to the fourth.

The Redhawks opened the fourth with Robertson throwing a three-yard touchdown to Dethman. Forizs then ran it in from five yards out for the Redhawks. CJI finally answered with a five-yard touchdown run from Nelson, but the Redhawks could not be stopped.

Dethman gave the Redhawks the lead with a 49-yard touchdown run. CJI kept pace with Ryland St. John throwing a 46-yard touchdown to Nelson. But the Redhawks took the lead for good with Dethman throwing a 65-yard touchdown to Forizs.

With the loss, the CJI six-man football team ended its season with a record of 8-2.
