John was born in Everett, WA, to Adam and Lillian (Peterson) Hecker April 21, 1944. Shortly after the war ended, the family moved to Devils Lake, ND, and later moved to Minot, ND. John attended school in Minot, graduating from Minot High School. He joined the Army in 1967, serving until his honorable discharge from active duty in 1969, but he remained in the Army Reserve until 1973.

John married Alison Moum in Minot, and they had two sons, Laef and Eric. In 1983, John's work with Burlington Northern Railroad moved the family to Havre. He worked for the railroad for 33 years until his retirement in 2004.

John instilled in his sons the love of cars, vintage and new, and interest in motors, wheels and racing. Upkeep of his vehicles was of the utmost importance to him. John was a quiet man, but the T-shirt saying "Will Talk About Cars" was most fitting.

John was preceded in death by his parents; wife's parents; oldest sister, Pat Teschner; sisters-in-law, Marie Church and Joann Schwanz; brothers-in-law, Larry Eaton, Marvin Manske, Arnold Moum and, most recently, Dale Moum.

John is survived by his wife, Alison of Havre; sons, Laef (Shannon) of Southaven, MS, and Eric (Sissy) of Grand Junction, CO; grandchildren, Jonathan (Beth), Lance (Danica), Delaney, Allen, and Abby; step-grandchildren, Destiny, Doran, Sierra, and LJ; great-grandchildren, Reatha and Laef Remy; sisters, Nancy Manske of WI and Caroll Eaton of ND; brother, David Hecker of WA; nieces, LeeAnn (Chris) Dunn, Stacie (Spencer) Brown, and Sarah Vetter; nephew, Cannon (Rebecca) Church; and other nieces, nephews, and cousins living out of state.
