MSU-Northern gets summer camp grants The Montana Office of the Commissioner of Higher Education has awarded Montana State University-Northern two grants to fund summer camps as part of the Gear Up program. Gear Up targets high school students from disadvantaged and low-income families to help them enter and succeed in college. The university received a grant for $14,970 to host a Y-Nursing Summer Camp to help youths enter nursing and other health care fields. The other grant, for $16,045, is for Traditional Native American Story-Telling Meets Modern Digital Technology. Participants will use digital technology during the camp to record aspects of a Native American vision quest, then produce a storybook, multimedia slideshow or Web page in traditional Native American storytelling style of the vision quest. The camps will be held July 7-11 at Northern. Gear Up summer camps are primarily for students enrolled in Gear Up schools across the state who are entering ninth through 12th grades. If maximum enrollment for each camp is not reached by May 1, the camps are then opened up to all students.
