Tuesday marks one year since 9-year-old Kellen Lund's death rocked the community when he was struck by a truck at a 1st Street and 7th Avenue crossing.

As a way to help his friends and family remember him, his mother, Jeri O'Leary, said, the First Annual Kellen Lund Memorial Bike Ride will be held Saturday, Aug. 7, in Pepin Park.

"I think I wanted to do it just because he was so young," she said.

"Just so his friends can remember him."

All ages are welcome to participate in either a 3-mile or 5-mile ride, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and the rides kicking off at 10:30 a.m. Having different age groups participating is fitting in the ride to remember Kellen, who O'Leary said rode his bike every day.

"He was such a l ikable kid.

Everybody liked him no matter who they were," O'Leary said.

"I want drivers to realize that kids are on their bikes every day in the summer, and they need to drive slow.  And I just hope this really raises awareness for everybody," she said.

After the rides, a slowest bike race, cone race and pump up the wheel contest will take place.  Participants also are invited to enjoy a barbecue.

The ride is free of charge, but donations will be accepted to help fund next year's ride.

People who don't want to ride in the event are welcome, too, and volunteers are needed.

"I just think Kellen would want everyone to have fun and participate," O'Leary said.
