For five innings the Havre Comets we're doing the unthinkable, they had their older cohorts, the Havre Northstars, down. But a game is usually nine innings and in the remaining four innings the Northstars crushed any hopes of a Comet upset winning 14-5 Wednesday night at Legion Park.
A pair of bad innings haunted the Comets in the game. The Northstars scored five runs in the top of the sixth and five more in the top of ninth to put the game away.
Levi Briese's two-run triple off Comet starter Chase Castloo highlighted the sixth inning as the Northstars rallied after trailing 4-3 for the first five innings. Castloo got himself in trouble by walking back-to-back batters before facing Briese. Ian Spencer added another RBI single in the inning and Mark Benjamin's single drove in two more.
The Comets pulled Castloo in hopes of cooling the Northstar bats, and for two innings it worked. The Northstars went scoreless in the seventh and got just one in the eighth.
However, in the ninth the Comets hurt themselves by committing three errors leading to five runs. Spencer and Tyson Roe each drove in a pair of runs as the Northstars pulled away.
The Comets scored four runs early off Northstar starter Corey Junck. Kaare Engebretson's double scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to give the Comets a 4-3 lead. But Junck settled down after that allowing just one run and no hits over the final five innings. Junck pitched the complete game and struck out seven while allowing just five hits.
The Northstars pounded out 17 hits in the game, led by Benjamin, Daine Solomon and Tyson Roe, who collected three apiece. Benjamin and Spencer had three RBIs apiece, while Briese and Roe each had a pair.
The Northstars will be in action on Saturday as they host the Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs 'AA' squad at 1 p.m., while the Comets will take on the Medicine Hat Knights on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be at Legion Park.
