Robert was born on June 17, 1963 at Fort Belknap to Glen and Leona (Longfox) Messerly Jr. He was raised at Fort Belknap and attended school at Harlem.

Robert was a hard-working person. He spent much of his time taking care of his cows at the valley pasture near Fort Belknap. He also helped out his nephews, Manny and Scott Healy, with their cows and also Willie Ray and Jesse Jr., with whatever they needed.
He enjoyed spending time with his many nieces and the rest of his nephews, who all had the utmost respect for him. He loved to fish, hunt, read western books, ride horses, basketball, riding motorcycles. He was also liked playing pool and was a good mechanic and loved to spend time with his family. He especially loved his children and his nieces and nephews. Robert had a big heart and was always willing to help. He would give what he had to anyone who needed it more than he did.
