Pony golfers take to the road for tourneys

Since the Havre High golf team only has one home meet all season, the Ponies will have to get used to life on the road. The HHS golfers will get a chance to see quite a bit of different scenery in Montana over the next few days.

Havre is in East Glacier today for the Browning Invitational. The 18-hole tournament is being held at the Golf Course at East Glacier Lodge.

The tourney will feature the host Browning Indians as well as Lewistown, Havre and the Whitefish Junior Varsity team. Havre will have a JV team at the meet as well.

The Ponies had another round of qualifying on Thursday and boys lineup remains virtually unchanged. Sophomore Matt Hedstrom leads the way for HHS followed by senior Ben Erickson. Anthony Wirtzberger, Brandon Job and Sean Strand will also compete for the HHS varsity this week.

The HHS girls squad will have a little different look in Browning as senior Cathy Beecher will be absent from the Pony lineup. Instead, of replacing Beecher, HHS head coach Karla Bolken will go with the lineup of Ali Ward, Brittany Job, Haley McLain and Stacy Sheppard.

"The Browning meet probably won't give us a lot of competition unless Whitefish brings their varsity team," Bolken said. "But we get to bring our JV kids and it will be a good experience for all of our younger players."

After Labor Day weekend is over, the Ponies will return to the road Tuesday for the Belgrade Invitational. The 18-hole tournament next Tuesday will be held at the Riverside Country Club in Bozeman. This is the first time the Ponies have made the trip to the Belgrade tourney and Bolken is looking forward to the event.

"I am excited about the Belgrade tournament because we will see the whole Central A conference," Bolken said. "It is good for us to scout those teams, but I think it is really important for our kids to see those teams. To play against them early in the season will give them all an idea of where they stand going into divisionals."

The Belgrade tournament will feature teams from Havre, Lewistown, Belgrade, Anaconda, Butte Central, Livingston and Browning.

Havre will tee off in Bozeman next Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Riverside Country Club.
