Pioneer spikers complete weekend sweep; Blue Sky/J-I rolls

The Big Sandy Pioneers continue to prove that they are a contender in the District 6C volleyball race.

The Pioneers capped a weekend sweep of Box Elder and Rocky Boy to vault themselves near the top of the conference standings.

Big Sandy defeated Box Elder 25-22, 25-17, 25-20 on Thursday in Box Elder as Shalayna Pearson led the way with five kills and two blocks. The Pioneers also got four kills and 10 digs from Jessica Amsbaugh in the win. Box Elder got five kills and 11 assists from Ashley Parisian and five kills and 13 digs from Codi Raining Bird in the loss.

The Pioneers picked up their second win of the weekend with a 25-16, 25-17, 24-26, 25-18 decision over Rocky Boy in Big Sandy. Raynee Pearson banged out 10 kills and had 10 digs to lead the Pioneers. Kacy Herron added four kills and 11 assists, while Mikki Hammons had 10 assists, six aces and six digs. Big Sandy served up 25 aces in the match, led by Naomi Williams' seven.

Rocky Boy was led by Loni Belcourt, who had six kills and 14 digs. Rainbow Stump added 16 assists in the win.

Also on Thursday, KG defeated Rocky Boy 25-9, 25-18, 26-24 behind 29 service aces by the KouGars. Kendra Donoven led KG with nine aces, while Tasha Dyrland ripped 13 kills. Whitney Hanson added 21 assists and Kate Vosen picked up 20 digs in the match.

Belcourt paced Rocky Boy with eight kills and five digs.

Box Elder rebounded from the loss to Big Sandy to score a 25-4, 25-17, 25-16 win over KG on Friday in Box Elder.

Tasha Parisian had eight kills and two blocks, while Ashley Parisian added 10 assists.

Blue Sky/J-I continued to stay near the top of 6C with a 25-21, 25-14, 25-14 win over Sunburst in Rudyard. The Eagles got six kills and six blocks from Katie O'Neil in the win. Sunburst was led by Cherry Tomsheck's nine kills and two blocks.

District 6C co-leader Chester was defeated 25-19, 15-25, 25-17, 25-14 by Fort Benton in a tough nonconference match. Shawnee Norick had 10 kills and Brianne Wolfe had eight blocks in the loss for Chester.

Also on Friday the Harlem Wildcats troubles continued as Wolf Point downed the Wildcats 25-21, 25-18, 25-16 in Harlem.

Marty Rae Stiffarm led Harlem with seven kills and three blocks. Melinda Cochran added eight assists.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season. After falling in three games to Havre on Thursday, the Beeters were upended by Glasgow 25-23, 25-21, 25-15 on Saturday in Glasgow. Kelly Hagfildt had 12 kills to lead the Scotties. Chinook got seven kills and four blocks from Whitney Lybeck. Monica Thackeray had a match-high 19 digs.

Elsewhere on Saturday, the KG KouGars outlasted Hobson 15-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-20 in the their third match of the weekend. Tasha Dyrland had a season-high 21 kills to lead KG. Jodi Norman racked up 30 digs while Whitney Hanson dished out 17 assists in the match.

In Hays, the Stanford junior varsity squad downed Hays-Lodge Pole 25-11, 25-7, 25-21. Sheena Shambo had two aces, two assists and three digs to lead the T-Birds.
