The Havre Ice Hawk high school hockey team will open the high school state tournament today in Butte against Great Falls at 3 p.m. The Ice Hawks finished in fourth place in their division.
Havre is coming off a tough weekend tournament in Bow Island, Sasketchewan, in which it dropped three games against some stiff competition.
The Ice Hawks opened the tournament with a 13-7 loss to Vulcan, Alberta. The Ice Hawks put together a furious comeback in the third period, scoring five goals in 10 minutes before coming up short. Corey Stremcha picked up a hat trick while Josh Morse scored a pair of goals and added an assist. Jordan Patterson and Chazz Hurlburt added unassisted goals for Havre.
A day later Havre fell to St. Paul 7-1. Michael Erickson scored the Ice Hawks lone goal.
On Sunday, the Ice Hawks dropped a tough 6-4 decision to Edmonton, Alberta. Patterson, Hurlburt and Michael Anderson all had goals for Havre in the loss.
The Havre Ice Hawk Pee Wee squad picked up three wins in its last four games starting on Feb. 7 in Bozeman.
Havre opened the road trip with a 6-1 win over the Stingers "B" squad as Beau Briese scored an unassisted goal and added two assists in the win. Kyle Miller, Nick Woods and C.J. Evans added unassisted goals while Shane Kemmer added a goal with an assist from Briese and Tyler Miller, who also scored a goal of his own on an assist from Briese and Zack Wavrick.
Cameron Schilling picked up 11 saves in goal for Havre.
The Ice Hawks fell a day later to the Stingers "A" squad 7-4. Nick Wood opened Havre's scoring on assist from Dylan Patterson. Dillon McLain scored Havre's second goal on assist from Kyle Miller. Shane Kemmer and Miller rounded out the scoring with goals assisted by Beau Briese and Jesse Majeres and Evans.
Willie DeVries stopped a whopping 31 shots on goal for Havre.
The Ice Hawks took to the road again last weekend, this time traveling to Butte. Havre opened the road trip with a 7-0 win over the Butte Blues.
Beau Briese and Shane Kemmer scored two goals each while Adam Briese added a goal and an assist and Majeres and Woods each added goals. Notching assists for Havre were Tyler Miller (2), Shane Kemmer (2), Tyler Miller (2), Dylan Patterson, Nick Sunchild and Andrew Bradshaw.
Alex Sinclair picked up the shutout in goal, stopping eight shots.
Havre exploded a day later with an 11-3 trouncing of Butte to complete the weekend sweep. Beau Briese, McLain, Woods and Kemmer scored two goals each in the win. Majeres added a goal and four assists while Kyle Miller added a goal and two assist. C.J. Evans added a goal, and Tyler Miller (3), Adam Briese and Sunchild all had assists.
Willie DeVries had three saves in goal for Havre.
