Eighty-six registered shooters participated in the 26th annual Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club Spring Shoot held Memorial Day weekend at Fort Assinniboine south of Havre. The event drew participants from all over the state and Canada. In addition to shooting, family oriented events were held for adults and children, including tomahawk and knife throwing, women's frying pan throw and the team pancake races.
Clyde Byerly of Great Falls won the overall aggregate trophy with a combined score of 212 points and a bull's-eye on five targets. He won the offhand aggregate with 125 points in three matches and also took home the cross-stick aggregate with 87 points and a bull's-eye on two targets.
Kathy Griggs of Missoula won the Women's aggregate trophy with a score of 116 on three targets. Bradd Cobb of Great Falls picked up the pistol aggregate with 178 points and two bull's-eyes on two targets. The cartridge aggregate title went to Bradd Cobb of Great Falls with 137 points and three bull's-eyes in three matches. Primitive aggregate was won by Tom Brown of Havre with 115 points. Long-range cartridge aggregate went to Missoula's Cameron Griggs with a string of four hits.
A special honorary plaque was given to David Thompson of Havre for his dedication and generous help to the Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club for the many years he has been involved in the sport.
The club also drew for a buffalo hunt to be held later this fall or winter. The winner was Chuck Gehringer of Havre.
