Chinook impressive in Class C debut; Chester/J-I moves to 2-0 in 6C

The 2005 Montana high school volleyball season got underway this past weekend with teams in the area trying to start the season off on a good note.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters' debut in Class C was a dominant one. The Beeters crushed the Box Elder Bears 25-9, 25-9, 25-10 on Friday in Box Elder. Chinook served up a whopping 27 aces in the match led by Gen Burkhartsmeyer's seven aces. Georgia Barber banged out nine kills and Crystal Roseberry added 17 assists in the win. No individual stats were available for Box Elder.

Perennial District 6C power Chester/J-I started off its season with a pair of wins. The Hi-Line Hawks cruised past a good Sunburst squad 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 Friday night in Chester.

The Hawks were paced by a solid all-around performance from Keyla Briese, who racked up 12 kills, 22 assists and three digs in the win. Hannah Pimley had a solid debut for Chester/J-I with seven kills and seven blocks. Joanna LaSorte added 25 assists and three aces in the win.

Chester/J-I made it a perfect weekend with a 25-13, 25-23, 25-12 win over new rival North Star High on Saturday night in Rudyard.

Pimley had a big game against some of her former teammates with 11 kills, six digs and three aces. She got some help from LaSorte, who added nine assists, while Brianne Wolfe had a match-high eight blocks.

North Star was led by Tasha Dyrland, who had 10 kills and four blocks in the loss.

Also on Saturday, the Big Sandy Pioneers defeated Rocky Boy 25-17, 25-9, 25-13 in Rocky Boy. Shalayna Pearson had 11 kills and two blocks to lead Big Sandy. Kacy Herron dished out 15 assists, while Naomi Williams added eight aces.

Rocky Boy got four fills and two aces from Frances Eagleman, while Courtney St. Pierre added nine digs in the loss.

In Class B volleyball action, the Harlem Wildcats found the M-Ette Invitational in Malta a tough way to start the season.

Harlem failed to win a game in pool play or match in tourney play against some very good competition. The host M-Ettes won the tournament, defeating Plentywood 25-16, 25-22 in the championship. Shelby finished third, defeating Wolf Point in the consolation match.
