The Havre High boys golf team may have come into the season a little rusty. But given how they fared in Bozeman on Tuesday afternoon, The Ponies may be hitting mid-season form.
The HHS boys team shot a stellar 313 on Tuesday to capture first place honors at the Belgrade Invitational held in Bozeman. The Ponies finished a commanding 10 strokes better than second place Anaconda. Host Belgrade was third amongst the field of 10 quality Class A teams.
Aside from Havre's fine team play, the Ponies also got solid performances individually from all five of their varsity golfers.
Brandon Job finished his round with a stellar 75, that was just two strokes off of being top medalist for the day. Senior Sean Strand also had an outstanding day, firing a 77, which put him in a tie for fourth place. Junior Matt Hedstrom continued his steady golf with a round of 80, while Anthony Wirtzberger and junior Billy Wagner came in with rounds of 81 and 87.
While it was a great day for the Havre High boys golf team, the HHS girls squad didn't fair too bad either. The tournament was a runaway as far as the team title went, with Livingston virtually lapping the field. The Rangers scored an astounding 378 to second-place Anaconda's 412. The Havre High girls were third with a team score of 431.
Havre High junior Ali Ward continued her strong start to the season by finishing in third place overall with a round of 96. Sophomores Stacy Sheppard and Haley McLain came in with scores of 109 and 112, respectively. Steadily improving freshman Tabitha Beck rounded out the HHS scoring with a round of 114.
The Ponies will now prepare for their only home meet of the season on Saturday. The Havre Invitational will get under way at 9 a.m. at Beaver Creek Golf Course in Havre.
