Chinook marched into Drummond on Saturday riding a nine-game winning streak and with their dream season still intact. By the time Drummond was done with Chinook, the Sugarbeeters' dreams were replaced by a harsh reality.
The top-ranked, two-time defending state champion Drummond Trojans ended Chinook's perfect season in dominating fashion with a 64-0 victory in a Class C eight-man quarterfinal playoff game.
The Beeters came into the game confident that they could hang around with the Trojans for a while. But, after Chinook went three and out on its first possession and gave the Trojans good field position, Drummond's Chase Reynolds scored on a 32-yard run to give the Trojans a 7-0 lead.
The route was on. In all, the Trojans rolled up 42 first-quarter points.
The Beeters' high-powered spread offense - an offense that averages more than 40 points a game - was shut out for the first time all year. Chinook quarterback Adam Hayes was just 11-of-30 through the air for 137 yards and no touchdowns. Hayes also ran for his life much of the day, as he ended up rushing for negative 42 yards on 10 carries.
In addition to not being able to get their offense going, the Beeters were incapable of slowing down the machine that is the Drummond Trojans' rushing attack. Reynolds had a spectacular game, rushing for 183 yards on 10 carries, and had touchdown runs of 32, 35, 46, 32 and 3 yards. Reynolds also scored on a 14-yard interception return for a touchdown, as well as a 40-yard punt return. Reynolds would finish up with seven touchdowns on the day. Tyrell Cochrell also had a solid day, pitching in with two touchdowns on runs of 25 and 9 yards.
Drummond didn't attempt a single pass on the afternoon.
As a team the Beeters barely netted any positive rushing yards. Chad Beck, playing in his final game in a Chinook uniform, led the way with 18 yards on the ground. Casey Barber had 11 yards on one carry.
Chinook was forced to keep throwing the ball throughout the game.
Beck wrapped up his Chinook career by catching four balls for 50 yards. Tad Darah also caught four passes for 50 yards, and Marty Birky caught three for 46 yards.
The Trojans have now won 33 straight games and appear to be headed toward a third consecutive Class C state championship.
The Trojans will move on to face Stanford on Saturday in the Class C semifinals.
