The Mining City Duals in Butte are one of the most prestigious tournaments in Montana wrestling and it features top teams from all classes. Havre High became the first Class A school ever to win the tournament last year, and the Ponies were hoping that history would repeat itself this weekend.

However, the Ponies fell short in their goal of winning the tournament, but they came away with an impressive outing and ended up finishing fourth.

The Ponies won their first five duals to earn them a spot in the semifinals against Kalispell, one of the top teams in Class AA. But the Ponies couldn't overcome a powerful Kalispell team, which won 10 out of 15 matches on its way to a 51-27 victory over the Ponies. In the dual the Ponies got wins from Beau LaSalle, Nathan Harada, Ryan Shelstad and Evan Hinebauch. Matt Schnittgen also got an 8-5 decision in the 275-pound weight class.

The Ponies would then go on to the third-place dual, where they faced Class AA defending state champion Billings Skyview. In a fairly competitive dual, the Ponies won seven out of the 15 matches but ended up falling short by a score of 48-34.

The Ponies got victories by Schnittgen with a 3-1 decision, Myles Mazurkiewicz, Lorren Mack and Chad Ranes. LaSalle, Ethan Hinebauch and Evan Hinebauch all won by pin.

“We wrestled against Flathead and Skyview and those are two very solid teams,” HHS head coach Scott Filius said. “I thought that we wrestled very hard, and we competed pretty good against that kind of competition.”

Although the Ponies came up short of a team goal of capturing the championship, some HHS wrestlers had very solid weekends, as Evan Hinebauch and Beau LaSalle both went unbeaten. Ranes was only defeated once in the duals.

“Evan Hinebauch and Beau LaSalle both wrestled very well,” Filius said. “They went unbeaten in the tournament, and both defeated a defending state champion along the way.”

The Ponies collected five victories in the tournament, including Colstrip, which the Ponies defeated 58-12. The Ponies used pins from LaSalle, Ethan Hinebauch, Curtis Shandorf, Cody Seely, Phillip Sutherland and Schnittgen on their way to the victory.

“Phillip and Curtis both wrestled hard, and really all of the freshmen competed well this weekend,” Filius said.

The Ponies dominated Corvallis 72-12 as they only lost two matches in the dual.

The Ponies then knocked off rival Great Falls High in a close 40-31 decision.

The Ponies then moved on to a dual with Huntley Project on Saturday morning in the winner's tournament. The Ponies won 11 out of the 15 matches, including five pins, two decisions and four forfeits, on their way to another big victory by the score of 62-22.

Next up for the Ponies was Class AA Helena Capital, and the Ponies lost only four out of their 11 matches on their way to an easy victory. The Ponies got pins in the dual from Shelstad, LaSalle, Ethan Hinebauch and Nathan Harada.

“I thought that all the kids competed well this weekend,” Filius said. “We still have things that we need to work on such as scrambles or getting off the bottom, but those are just some of the things that come with being a young team.”

Havre will once again face the cream of the crop in Montana wrestling when the Ponies travel to Great Falls on Friday for the CMR Holiday Invitational.
