Two things were abundantly clear at Saturday's Havre Invitational swim meet at the MSU-Northern pool: The Havre High swim teams are very good, but so is their Class AA competition.
The Great Falls High Bison dominated the girls meet, scoring 174 points to second-place Havre's 73 points. Kalispell was third with 52 points.
GFH dominated the meet by winning two relay titles on Saturday and crowning seven individual champions in eight events.
The Ponies' relay teams weren't too bad either. Havre finished third and fifth in the 200 medley relay and second in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Ponies also had an outstanding day individually, led by Kyra Kaercher's win in the 200 freestyle. The senior finished the race with a stellar time of 2:22.44.
Jessica Obrecht also had a solid day for HHS, finishing second in the 100 breast stroke and third in the 200-yard individual medley. Junior Morgan Zimmer also placed in multiple events for the Ponies, as did Mary-Beth Blankenship.
Zimmer was third in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 500 freestyle. Blankenship finished fourth in the 200-yard IM and fifth in the 100 backstroke.
For the second straight week, the HHS boys were locked in a tight battle. Havre finished third with 77 points, while Kalispell was first with 93 points. The Braves just edged second-place CMR. The Rustlers scored 90 points.
The Kalispell boys didn't dominate the meet as the GFH girls did, but the Braves had enough places in the individual events and won two of the three relay races to catapult them ahead of CMR and Havre.
The Ponies had a solid day, especially in the 200 freestyle relay, which they captured with a time of 1:41.88.
The Ponies also had an individual champion on the day and dominated the 50 freestyle race. Sophomore D.J. Stuker dusted the field in the 100-yard backstroke, capturing the event with a blistering time of 1:05.31.
In the 50 free, the Ponies placed four swimmers in the top six, led by Michael Hauser, who finished second. Stuker finished just behind Hauser in third, while Scott Vigliotti and Steven Barton were fifth and sixth, respectively.
Vigliotti also had a fine all-around day for the Ponies. Aside from his fifth- place finish in the 50 free, he also finished third in the 20-yard free. Proving that the sprints are one of the HHS boys' strong points, junior Jordan Magelssen finished fifth in the 100-yard free.
The Ponies will return to the road on Saturday when they travel to the Great Falls Invitational at the GFH Pool.
