The 2005-06 girls basketball season is just getting started, but already the action has been outstanding across the Hi-Line.

Let's take a look back at the weekend that was in local high school basketball.

In Class B action on Friday night, the young Harlem Wildcats were no match for District 2B powerhouse Glasgow. The Scotties routed the Wildcats by 40 points, 66-26.

Harlem kept the game close in the first quarter, trailing 13-8. But the Wildcats only managed to score two points in the second period and that allowed the Scotties to build an insurmountable lead.

Star Carrywater and Gemma Rides At The Door led the Wildcats with five points each. Lola Mountain Chief chipped in with four points in the losing effort.

In District 9C action Friday night, heavily favored Big Sandy made short work of Box Elder, thrashing the Bears 84-52. The Pioneers outscored Box Elder 28-9 in the first quarter and then went on to lead the Bears 49-24 at intermission en route to the easy victory.

Big Sandy was led by Shalayna Pearson's game-high 25 points. Kacy Herron also chipped in with 17 points. Box Elder got 18 points from Sharlene Yellow Tail and 10 from Rokki Parker.

Friday night also saw the Rocky Boy Morning Stars lose for the first time this season, falling to Highwood, 58-46. Meanwhile, the North Star Knights pulled out an impressive win over Chinook, 46-44, in overtime and Turner crushed Dodson, 65-50.

On Saturday night, Harlem rebounded from its loss to Glasgow by defeating Poplar, 53-49. The Wildcats and Indians played a tight game for three quarters before Harlem was able to separate in the fourth quarter.

Star Carrywater and Amy Stiffarm paced the Wildcats with seven and five points, respectively.

Saturday night also saw Big Sandy continue its winning ways in the early 9C season by defeating North Star High School, 61-49. The Pioneers and Knights battled for three quarters, with neither team leading by more than two points. But Big Sandy broke open a 40-39 fourth -quarter lead by reeling off a 22-9 run in the final seven minutes of the game.

Naomi Williams led four Pioneers in double figures with 15 points. Shalayna Pearson added 13 points, while Kacy Herron and Jessica Amsbaugh pitched in with 13 and 11, respectively. North Star got 16 points from Megan Warren and 11 from Tasha Dyrland in the loss.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters also picked up the all-important first win of the season, and the first as a member of the 9C when they downed Box Elder, 42-37, on Saturday night.

Chinook pulled away from Box Elder in the game's final two minutes after being tied 39-39 heading into the final stanza.

The Beeters were paced by Dawn Kellam with 12 points and Cheyenne Hamilton with 10. The Bears got a game-high 16 points from Rokki Parker.

Like Chinook, Rocky Boy also managed to rebound from a Friday night loss with a win on Saturday. The Morning Stars outlasted 9C rival Hays-Lodge Pole, 57-50.

The game was a seesaw affair, with the Thunderbirds racing out to an 18-8 first-quarter lead before the Morning Stars stormed back in the second period via a 25-11 run to lead 33-39 at the half. The teams played a tight game down the stretch but the Morning Stars had just enough offense to hold on at the end.

Rocky Boy got a huge night from both Shaneen Rainingbird and Loni Belcourt. Rainingbird poured in 21 points and Belcourt added 20 in the win. Sheena Shambo paced the T-Birds with 16 points.

In District 10C action, the Chester/J-I Hawks gave a rude welcoming to district newcomer Augusta by thumping the Elks 81-44. The Hawks used runs of 27-10 and 29-8 to bury Augusta in the Elks' first game as a 10C member.

Brianne Wolfe paced the Hawks with 22 points and Keyla Briese added 20 points. Mary DeVries chipped in with 15 points.
