About 30 turkeys, five holiday food baskets and assorted foods were taken from the Havre Food Bank in a break-in earlier this week.
“This takes away what we have to give,” said Diane Savasten Getten, director of basic needs for District IV Human Resources Development Council. The food bank operates under the umbrella of HRDC.
She said the food won't be easily replaced because most of the goods were donated.
The holiday food baskets were being held for specific people who had been unable to pick them up, she added.
Savasten Getten said she thinks the break-in occurred Tuesday night. The theft was discovered Wednesday morning by a food bank worker.
According to a Hill County Sheriff's Office report, the thief got into the food bank by unscrewing a latch on the garage door.
Some of the turkeys were taken from a freezer. The freezer door was left open but its contents remained frozen, Savasten Getten said.
The exact amount of food stolen has not been determined. She said workers at the food bank are getting the costs together to submit to the Sheriff's Office and the insurance company.
She said insurance might cover some of the missing food.
Hill County Sheriff Greg Szudera said two deputies are investigating the theft.
Food bank director Don Bleak could not be reached for comment.
