Morning Stars secure 9C regular season title; T-Birds win two

With one week remaining in the regular season, teams across the Hi-Line are making one final push for regular season wins and important momentum before their respective district tournaments.

In District 9C, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars all but sewed up the District 9C regular season title with a 63-58 win over the Big Sandy Pioneers on Friday night in Rocky Boy.

The Stars overcame a 30-26 halftime deficit with a monster third quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 25-11 to take a 51-41 lead. Big Sandy hurt itself with costly turnovers against Rocky Boy's full-court pressure.

Big Sandy desperately tried to rally in the fourth quarter, outscoring Rocky Boy 17-12, but couldn't quite complete the comeback.

Loni Belcourt scored a game-high 20 points, while sister Tori added 13 for the Stars.

Kacy Herron led Big Sandy with 18 points. Shalayna Pearson added 13 points and Jessica Amsbaugh chipped in with 10.

The night before the Stars completed a season sweep of Class B Harlem with a 56-52 win in Harlem.

Rocky Boy jumped out to a 20-9 lead and held off a fierce Wildcat rally to get the win. Erin Broncho scored a season-high 16 points and Tori Belcourt added 15 to lead the Stars. With the two wins, Rocky Boy improved to 15-1 overall and 13-1 in the 9C.

Harlem was paced by Olivia Main's 22 points, which included four 3-pointers. Marty Rae Stiffarm added 11 points for Harlem.

Big Sandy was able to bounce back with a big 52-41 win over District 10C rival Chester on Saturday night in Chester.

Big Sandy jumped out to an early 14-11 lead after the first quarter and was able to hold off the Coyotes in the third and fourth quarters to secure the win.

Kacy Herron and Naomi Williams scored 16 points each to lead the Pioneers, while Sandy Zeiger and Shalayna Pearson added 10 points each.

Chester got 15 points from Jillien Johnson and 14 from Amanda Violett in the loss.

Chester didn't have quite as much trouble with its District 9C opponent on Friday night. The Coyotes handled the KG KouGars, 59-33, in Chester.

The Coyotes rolled to a 19-6 lead and never looked back, outscoring KG in every quarter but the fourth.

Mary DeVries scored 22 points and Shawnee Norick added 20 to lead the Coyotes, who improved to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the 10C. Jodi Norman led KG with 13 points and Whitney Hanson added 11 to lead the KouGars, who were playing without leading scorer Tasha Dyrland.

Elsewhere in District 9C, the Blue Sky/J-I Eagles made a push for second place in the conference with a 65-45 win over the Box Elder Bears Friday night in Joplin.

Blue Sky/J-I grabbed a 21-15 first half lead and pulled away, outscoring Box Elder 22-12 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Maia Aageson scored a season-high 23 points, including three 3-pointers to lead the Eagles. Kaila Warren added 19 points in the win.

Rokki Parker scored 14 points and Sharlene Yellowtail added eight in the loss.

Blue Sky/J-I picked up its second win of the weekend on Saturday with a 51-49 road win over Valier.

The Eagles overcame a 30-25 third quarter deficit, outscoring the Panthers 26-19 in the fourth quarter to pick up the win.

Hannah Pimley had a big game with 25 points, while Megan Warren chipped in with eight to lead to the Eagles. Ashley Breding scored 15 points to lead Valier.

The Hays-Lodge Pole T-Birds also had a big weekend, scoring a pair of wins.

On Friday, the T-Birds scored a 73-53 win over the Turner Tornadoes in Hays.

Hays-Lodge Pole held a slim 26-24 lead at halftime, but pulled away with a 20-8 run in the third quarter to secure its sixth conference win.

Colette Hawley scored a game-high 25 points, while Suzi Kirkaldie added 18 and Sheena Shambo chipped in with 16 points for the T-Birds.

Turner got 18 points from Kelsey Klindworth, 14 from Cheryl Cowan and 11 from Ashley VanVoast in the loss.

Hays-Lodge Pole continued its winning ways on Saturday with an 82-47 win over the Frazer Bearcubs on Saturday in Frazer.

The T-Birds got career highs from both Hawley and Kirkaldie in the blowout win. Hawley scored 31 points and Kirkaldie rolled up 30 to lead the T-Birds. Also in double figures was Yolanda Ereaux with 11 points.

Turner bounced back from the loss to Hays with a 63-28 win over the KG KouGars Saturday night in Gildford.

Cowan scored 24 points and Kelsey Klindworth added 17 to lead the Tornadoes. Ashley VanVoast chipped in with 12 points to help Turner improve to 6-8 in conference and 8-8 overall.

KG, which was still playing without Dyrland, got nine points from Kendra Donoven and seven from Jodi Norman.

Also on Saturday, Box Elder suffered its 11th loss of the season, falling to Sunburst 57-38 in Box Elder.

Box Elder grabbed an early 11-5 lead, but Sunburst rallied, outscoring the Bears in the final three quarters to pick up the win.

Rachel Kleinert scored 18 points to pace the Refiners. Box Elder got 12 points from Rebecca Eagleman in the loss.

In District 1B action, the Chinook Sugarbeeters picked up a big 53-51 win over District 2B rival Glasgow on Friday in Chinook.

The Beeters rallied from a five-point first half deficit to pick up the non-conference win.

Whitney Lybeck scored a game-high 20 points to pace the Beeters. Kassie Dugan and Monica Thackeray added eight each.

On Saturday, the Beeters suffered a tough 58-45 road loss to 1B opponent Fairfield.

The Beeters got down early in the first quarter and could never overtake the lead.

Lybeck led Chinook with 25 points, while Crystal Roseberry added eight. Fairfield was led by Alysa Brown's 17 points.

Elsewhere in Class B, the Harlem Wildcats picked up their third District 2B win of the season with a 47-41 overtime win over the Wolf Point Wolves.

Harlem outscored Wolf Point 6-0 in the extra period to secure the win.

Leandra Thomas scored 14 points and Olivia Main added 13 in the win. Marty Rae Stiffarm also chipped in with 10 for the Wildcats.

Tawnie Braaten scored 14 points to lead the Wolves.
