A Havre city crew repaired a cracked water main beneath First Street on Wednesday. Water was shut off for locations between Third and Fourth avenues for about two hours, deputy public works director Gary Schaub said.

The city was notified after water ran over First Street, he said. The break wasn't a major one, and workers were able to repair it using a 12-inch clamp, Schaub said. He said he wasn't sure what caused the crack.

"It wasn't a blowout," he said. "It was just a crack in the pipe. It could be anything. It could have been age. It could have been the soil settling. It's hard to tell."

Schaub said he did not know the age of the pipe.

The city plans to replace all of the water and sewer lines beneath First Street in 2007, during a major state Department of Transportation reconstruction project.
