Before the Havre High boys and girls track teams could get a week of rest and some relaxation, they had to get through Saturday's Lewistown Invitational. The road-weary Blue Ponies did just that as the HHS girls managed a second-place finish and the Blue Pony boys came in sixth.
The Havre High girls scored 82 points, which was just short of host Lewistown's meet-winning 87 points.
Havre's vaunted 400- and 1600-meter relay teams did not run Saturday because of the absence of sprinter Larissa Hand, so HHS head coach Mark West was more than happy with how his girls team finished its final tuneup before the Central A divisional meet in two weeks.
"I thought the girls really performed well on Saturday," West said. "We had a lot of kids place and we won a couple of events. I think scoring 80 points without our relay teams was a pretty good day."
West's daughter Kelsey got the Ponies' day off on a very high note when she captured the 100-meter championship with a sizzling time of 13.05. West's performance was good enough to edge teammate Carmen Neuens, who finished second in the race with a time of 13.4. Cammie West gave Havre a third athlete in the top six with a sixth- place finish.
Kelsey West and Neuens came back to help the Ponies out in the 200 and 400 meters. Neuens placed fifth in the 200, while West finished a very respectable fourth in her first 400-meter final of the season. Neuens' day also included a first -place finish in the high jump. Her best attempt of the day was a 5-0.
"It was very exciting to watch Kelsey perform so well," West said. "She has really been running well, and so have all of our sprinters. We had a really good day in the sprints, and right now that group is getting us a lot of points at every meet."
Of course, a Havre High girls meet would not be complete without a healthy dose of Lena Suek highlights, and Saturday was no exception to that. Suek went three for three in the throwing events, capturing first-place honors in the javelin, discus and shot put.
Havre also got a big boost in the distance races with Darci Briere capturing the 1600-meter championship with a time of 5:45.43. Kim Jestrab finished fourth in the 800 meters. Sophomore pole vaulter Jessica Nolan rounded out the scoring for Havre with a third-place finish.
While the girls shined on Saturday, the Havre High boys team struggled against some strong competition. The Ponies finished the meet with 51 points. The Lewistown boys captured the team championship.
"Our boys went out and competed hard and we did well in some areas," West said. "But we also were a little off in some events, and we just didn't finish the meet as strongly as we have in recent weeks."
Havre's lone individual winner on Saturday was senior Rick Houim, who captured first-place honors in the shot put. Houim's best throw was 45 feet, which easily won the meet. Houim finished third in the discus, and teammate Chris Buskirk finished sixth.
"Our throwers kind of carried us a little on Saturday," West said. "Ricky had a very good day, and he is really performing at a high level for us right now."
Senior Scott Robinson also continued to rack up points for the Ponies, as he has done all season. Robinson finished third in the 200 meters with a time of 23.4 and placed third in the 400 meters with a season-best time of 51.87. Robinson finished the day with fourth place in the long jump.
Now that Havre has completed its regular season, the Ponies will have several rest days before they return to practice to prepare for the Central A divisional meet May 20-21 in Butte.
"We're excited about getting ready for divisional," West said. "The kids are peaking right where we want them to for the most part and now we will rest them a little. Then we'll go back to work and get ready for the post season."
