WEST GLACIER (AP) - Two black bears have been shot and killed by rangers in Glacier National Park after developing a taste for human food, park officials announced Tuesday.
One was a female adult of about 140 pounds; the other an adult male weighing about 170 pounds.
The bears were spotted after reports Saturday about bears coming into the Elizabeth Lake campground, which was closed along with surrounding trails.
Officials said the bears didn't return Sunday but were back Monday and rangers said they showed ''food-conditioned behavior, searching for food at the food preparation area and at the food storage areas.''
''We hate to kill any park wildlife, but these bears had clearly become food-conditioned,'' said Stephanie Dubois, deputy superintendent.
The Elizabeth Lake area campgrounds and trails were reopened Tuesday.
