Nick Obie's run at the 2005 Men's U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships came to an end on Thursday morning in the round of 32 at Shaker Run Golf Course in Dublin, Ohio.
Obie, a former Havre High standout, fell to Redmond, Wash. native and UNLV standout Ryan Keeney 1 up on Thursday morning. Obie said that the match with Keeney was a difficult one, but one that he had opportunities to win.
"I felt like I played really well today," Obie said. "I hit the ball great but I just couldn't get my putter going and that is usually really reliable.
"But Ryan is a great player and he has been playing No. 2 at UNLV behind Ryan Moore the last couple of years," he added. "We halved 13 holes so it was a great match."
Although Obie was happy with his efforts, he also said that with how he was in control of his game this week, he should have went deeper into the tournament.
"The draw really shaped up well for me," he said. "At the beginning of the week if somebody would have told me that I would go this far, I would have been OK with that. But I played really solid golf and I should have been able to take it further."
Obie, who will be a senior at University of the Redlands next fall, has had a busy spring and summer. He will return to Montana this weekend to prepare for the Montana State Amateur Championship, which gets under way on Wednesday at Marias Valley Golf Club in Shelby.
On August 1, Obie will again go in search of major amateur championship glory when he tries to qualify for the USGA Men's Amateur Championship at Meadowlark Country Club in Great Falls.
