Considering the tough courses and the tough competition, Havre High golf coach Karla Bolken found plenty to pleased with in her team's showing at Great Falls Invitational over the past two days.

"I think we played pretty well considering it was the first tournament of the year," Bolken said. "We've only had a week of practice. All of the kids identified things they needed to work on after the meet which was good to see."

The Pony boys team finished ninth in a field that featured mostly Class AA competition. Havre had team rounds of 323-321 for a two-day total of 644. Whitefish won the boys title with a two-day score of 588.

Individually, Anthony Wirtzberger and Brandon Job led the way with two-day scores of 159. Both were fairly consistent. Job shot 79 on Monday and 80, while Wirtzberger was the opposite with a first-day score of 80, while shooting 79 on Tuesday.

"Anthony and Brandon both shot pretty well," Bolken said. "They were pretty consistent. We had some 79s which is good for us. I really don't know if we have the players to go into the low 70s."

Matt Hedstrom fired rounds of 79-83 to finish with 162, while Chris Owens shot 166 and Sean Strand came in at 171. Owens rallied after a tough 87 on Monday to shoot 79 on Tuesday.

"Chris had a great second day," Bolken said. "It was his first varsity meet and it was good to see him bounce back on the second day."

The HHS girls team also had a solid showing, despite finishing 14th overall. Havre only suited up four players, so they were forced to use those four scores and didn't have a choice of using the scores of a fifth player.

The Ponies were led by Ali Ward, who finished with a two-day total of 192. However, it was a mildly disappointing finish for Ward. After shooting a first day 89, she was in the tournament top 10. But a second-round 103 knocked her out of individual contention.

Sophomore Stacey Sheppard was consistent, shooting a 102-103 for a two-day total of 205.

"Those are the best scores that Stacey has ever shot in a tournament," Bolken said. "She worked really hard this summer to improve."

Rounding out the Havre scorers were freshman Tabitha Beck with a 115-120 for 235 and sophomore Hailey McLain with a 114-128 for a 242. Bolken was impressed with Beck's performance, considering it was her first varsity meet.

"Tabitha was pretty nervous that first day, but she walked off the course smiling," Bolken said.

The individual scoring for the boys and girls might not have been ideal, but Bolken knew they weren't going to be great in the first meet.

"We struggled with our putting," she said. "It's entirely different putting on those greens than on our course. Those courses also have plenty of trees, which we aren't used to. But it was the first meet of the season. I think it went pretty well."

Havre will be heading to Lewistown on Friday for a one-day tournament at the Judith Shadows golf course.
