The Havre High boys and girls swim teams are used to competing at a very high level. They picked a very tough meet to start their season as they competed at the prestigious Flathead Invitational in Kalispell this weekend.
The meet was very good to the HHS girls team, which finished in second place with 197 points. The Ponies and the rest of the Class AA competition were no match for host Kalispell, who won the meet with an astounding 366 points.
The HHS girls' success was even more impressive considering the fact that the rest of the field was composed of Class AA competition, and that Havre did not have an individual champion on Saturday.
The Blue Pony relay teams sparked Havre's second-place finish. Havre finished second and seventh in the 200- yard medley relay, as well as second and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Individually, the Ponies got big life from the likes of Morgan Zimmer, who finished third in the 50-yard butterfly, as well as Jessica Obrecht, who finished third in the 50-yard breast stroke. Kaitlin Perrodin finished sixth in the same event.
Megan Reinke also scored well for Havre. Reinke finished fifth in the 50-yard back stroke, as well as seventh in the 50-yard freestyle event. She also competed well on the HHS relay teams.
On the boys' side, the Ponies did not fare as well but had a solid showing. Havre High finished fourth with 155 points, just behind Missoula Hellgate. Kalispell made it a clean sweep on the day, winning the boys meet with 239 points.
Havre's day included strong showings in the relay events. The Pony boys finished third, seventh and eighth in the 200-yard free relay. HHS teams also finished fifth and sixth in the 200-yard medley relay.
Michael Hauser paced the HHS effort with seventh-place finishes in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. Hauser also competed valiantly on the HHS relay teams.
Havre also got solid scoring from the likes of Jordan Magelssen, Scott Vigliotti and Matt Hartman.
The Blue Ponies will return to action on Saturday when they host the Havre Invitational.
