It doesn't matter what sport you participate in, four weeks of practice would get old really fast. But such was the dilemma for the Havre High swim team. Because of an odd scheduling month, the Ponies found themselves idle for four weeks over Christmas break.
However, the Ponies finally got a little competition this past weekend with a triangular meet in Great Falls on Friday and the Bozeman High Invitational on Saturday.
While the overall team scores don't necessarily reflect it, head coach Chris Inman was more than pleased with her team's performance, considering it hadn't competed since the second weekend of December.
"The kids swam really well overall," Inman said. "All of our times were down and we swam hard and competed well."
The competition was definitely a nice change of pace.
"We're not used to having four weeks off without competing," Inman said. "The kids were really excited to get back out there and compete. It was tough to keep them motivated. We had to be creative with practice."
Inman made practice fun at times with movie outings and different workouts, and it seemed to pay off.
Both the boys and girls teams finished second at the Great Falls triangular behind Great Falls High.
The Bison girls are a AA powerhouse that should contend for a team title this season. Havre scored a respectable 62 points compared with GFH's 109 points.
The Ponies got one individual win from Jessie Obrecht in the 100 breaststroke. In the 200 medley relay, the Havre A squad of Mary-Beth Blankenship, Obrecht, Morgan Zimmer and Rachel Hansen finished first with a time of 2:11.13.
Blankenship and Hansen added second-place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 freestyle.
The HHS boys were competing in the first meet without standout senior Scott Robinson, who is sidelined following wrist surgery.
Still, the Ponies scored 62 points, just behind Great Falls High's 85. It's a result that Inman felt could've been a little different.
"We left quite a few boys at home," Inman said. "If we had our full team, I know we could have beaten Great Falls."
Havre had just one individual winner as Kevin Friede captured the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:16.56. The team of D.J. Stuker, Bryden Vukasin, Jordan Croft and Sam Simpson grabbed a second in the 200 medley relay. In the 200 free relay, the team of Levi Filler, Friede, Jordan Magelssen and Simpson finished second. Stuker also added a second in the 100 backstroke.
At the Bozeman Invite, no official team results were available, but Havre had several placers on both sides.
Hansen finished second in the 50 free and fourth in the 100 free for the girls. For the boys, Scott Vigliotti grabbed a third in the 200 free and fourth in the 400 free, while Stuker, Kinholt and Hartman finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the 200 IM. Jordan Croft added a fourth in the 200 free and Kevin Friede was fourth in the 100 backstroke.
Havre will go back to the normal routine of competing every week as the Ponies prepare for the Class A Invitational on Saturday in Hardin.
"We're going to keep plugging along and working hard," Inman said. "We're really focusing on this weekend and the Class A meet. It will give us a chance to see all of the other Class A competition that we are going to see at the state meet. We get to see where we stack up against them and how things could go at the state meet."
