Devon Energy and Walleyes Unlimited are hosting the 13th annual Fresno Youth Challenge Saturday at the main public beach at Fresno Reservoir. The competition is open and free to all students in grades one through eight.
Boat inspection and a rules meeting will begin at 8 a.m. At least one team member must attend the rules meeting. Fishing will take place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., followed by a barbecue and a casting competition.
Each team of two children must be joined by at least one adult team member, but a second adult member is optional. All anglers 12 and older must have a valid Montana conservation license.
Tournament prizes will be based on two walleyes weighed per team with prizes awarded for first, second and third place. Prizes will also be awarded for the largest northern pike, largest perch and largest trout.
The casting competition will be divided into two divisions - grades one through five and grades six through eight - and will include prizes.
Entry forms can be picked up and dropped off at Bing N Bob's Sport Shop or Stromberg's Sinclair in Havre, Blackie's Fresno Tavern, or the Mountaineer office in Big Sandy.
Teams can fish from shore or from a boat. Anyone needing the use of a boat can call Doug Grubb at 378-2163. The field will be limited to the first 50 teams to enter.
On Friday, the Fresno Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited will host a Kids' Education Day at Fresno with area students in preparation for the tournament.
The following weekend, Walleyes will host its annual Fresno Challenge, a two-day fishing tournament for serious anglers. The May 21-22 tournament, too, will be held at Fresno.
