The only drama surrounding the girls team title at the District 9C track meet Wednesday was which one of the Blue Sky/J-I Eagles would score the most points for her team.

As expected, Blue Sky/J-I ran away with the team title on a cold and blustery day at the Havre Middle School track, and did so in dominant fashion, scoring a ludicrous 310 team points, outdistancing second-place Big Sandy by more than 200 points. The Pioneers scored a respectable 82 points, while KG was third with 41.

"You can't really complain about 310 points," joked Eagles head coach Bill Mulvaney. "We did what we were supposed to do."

Indeed, no other team in the 9C, or perhaps the Northern C, possesses the type of depth that the Blue Sky/J-I girls have. Still, with all those solid athletes, Mulvaney's girls have embraced the team concept wholeheartedly.

"Our girls really go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to our team," Mulvaney said. "They really work hard on the little things and put the team first."

And that team effort placed more than one Eagle athlete in every event, and won all but four individual titles along the way.

Senior Kaila Warren took home the team's top-scoring honors, racking up 44 team points for her squad. Warren tasted sweet redemption in the 100 hurdles, bringing home the title after a disappointing disqualification last year.

Warren also picked up individual titles in the 300 hurdles with a time of 52.70 and the triple jump with a leap 31 feet, 5 inches. She did, however, come up short in her quest for five individual titles. Freshman teammate Deserie O'Neil edged her out in the 200, while Big Sandy's Shersteen Cline won the 400 and Warren had to settle for third.

"Kaila had a good day," Mulvaney said. "Winning the 100 hurdles was important for her, but she looked good in all her events. She is such a competitor."

Kaila wasn't the only Warren scoring points. Megan Warren racked up 36.5 points for the Eagles behind a first-place finish in the 100 meters, where Blue Sky/J-I finished 1-2-3. Tia Pester and Whitney Kline finished second and third, respectively. Megan Warren added a long jump title with a mark of 14-06, a second in the triple jump and a third in the discus.

"Megan came through for us big in a couple events," Mulvaney said.

O'Neil was the Eagle's third highest point scorer. Despite only winning one event, O'Neil racked up 33 points, adding second-place finishes in the 400 and high jump, while taking a third in the pole vault and a sixth in the long jump.

"That's a pretty good performance for a freshman," Mulvaney said. "She got us a lot of points in different areas."

Eagles sophomore Hannah Pimley successfully defended her high jump title, clearing a height of 5-2. She also added thirds in the 100 and 300 hurdles and shot put.

Blue Sky/J-I got individual titles from Pester in the pole vault, Courtney Wendland in the javelin and discus, and Kile Patrick in the 3,200.

The Eagles swept the relays as Pester, Megan Warren, Whitney Kline and Maia Aageson took home the 400-meter relay title, while the quartet of Vanessa Lipp, Patrick, Kline and Aageson won the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 4:20.10.

Big Sandy's second-place finish was spurred on by the efforts of a pair of freshmen. The duo of Shersteen Cline and Morgan Darlington scored 48 of Big Sandy's 83 points.

Darlington won her best event - the 800 - with a solid time of 2:35.50, beating defending champ Patrick. Darlington also edged Patrick in the 1,600 with a time of 5:59.20. Cline won the 400 with a time of 65.80, while finishing third in the 200 and fourth in the 100.

"Morgan had a nice day," said Big Sandy head coach Roy Lackner. "It was only the second time she's run the mile all season. For her to beat a good runner like Patrick is big."

KG's third-place finish was paced by a solid showing from Kate Vosen, who finished third in the long and high jump and fourth in triple jump. Freshman Natasha Dyrland also chipped in with a third in the javelin and a fifth in the 100 hurdles.

Turner got a strong showing from Ashley Van Voast with second-place finishes in the 100 and 300 hurdles and discus and fourth in the shot put.

Hays-Lodge Pole got a first-place finish from Colette Hawley in the shot put with a toss of 29-09.

While Blue Sky/J-I will celebrate yet another team title, Mulvaney was already looking forward to next week's Northern C Divisional.

"The big thing is that we qualified the kids we wanted to qualify and didn't have any big mistakes or injuries," he said.

The Northern C Divisional will be held next Thursday in Great Falls.
