The U.S. post office in Hays was broken into this week and three money orders were stolen, Hays postmaster Dawn Moore said Wednesday.
Moore has told local businesses to be on the lookout for the money orders. She said she had heard somebody had already attempted to cash two of them.
When workers arrived Wednesday morning, they saw there was damage to the metal screen that separates the customer service area of the post office from the back room. Moore said she believes someone tried to break in Tuesday night.
Moore said she could not tell from the damage whether they had succeeded.
A postal inspector, scheduled to arrive in Hays today, will determine how the orders were stolen, Moore said.
Over the weekend, the post office had been vandalized and there was an apparent attempted break- in, Moore said. Vandals damaged the door but apparently did not enter the building, she said.
