It wasn't as successful a first day as the Havre high boys and girls golf teams would have liked. The HHS boys sat in third place and the HHS girls were in a disappointing eighth place Thursday after 18 holes of the Class A state golf tournament in Whitefish.
The boys are playing at the difficult Whitefish Lake North course, and as expected, the host Whitefish Bulldogs jumped out to a commanding first-day lead. Whitefish finished the day with a team score of 305. That put them well out in front of the field heading into today's final round. Billings Central sat in second place at 322. The Blue Ponies were in third at 336 and were in contention for a trophy. But they were only four strokes ahead of fourth-place Ronan and nine strokes ahead of fifth-place Polson.
Junior Matt Hedstrom paced the HHS boys with a score of 81. Brandon Job, Anthony Wirtzberger and Sean Strand shot 84, 85 and 86, respectively. Marshall Cartwright rounded out the scoring for Havre with a 93. No HHS player sat in the top 10.
While the Havre High boys were still in the hunt for a state trophy, the Havre High girls team didn't help its chances of contending for any hardware on Thursday afternoon. The Blue Pony girls finished the first day of play on the Whitefish Lake South Course with a team score of 452. The fact that Havre is in eighth place was tough enough, but the Ponies were 19 strokes behind seventh-place Ronan.
Polson had a commanding lead of 13 strokes on second-place Whitefish, while Miles City and Anaconda sat in third and fourth place, respectively.
Junior Ali Ward didn't have her best day on Thursday and was the only Blue Pony to break 100. Ward, who was considered a contender for all-state honors, finished her first round with a score of 92. She was 12 strokes off the lead and three strokes out of the top 10 heading into today's final round. The rest of the HHS girls struggled on the first day as well. Sophomores Stacey Sheppard and Haley McLain fired rounds of 112 and 117, respectively. Freshman Tabitha Beck's first-ever state tournament round was also an eye-opener. Beck shot a 131.
The Class A state tournament will conclude this afternoon at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
