Chester/J-I keeps rolling; North Star wins two

The girls basketball season is now half over, which means things will start to get very interesting across the Hi-Line.

In Friday night District 10C action, the Chester/J-I Hawks' undefeated season kept on rolling with a 100-37 thrashing of Dutton-Brady.

Mary DeVries paced the Hawks offensively with a game-high 30 points. Hannah Pimley chipped in with 16 points, and Amanda Violett added 14.

In District 9C action, the Box Elder Bears picked up their second win of the season, defeating Turner, 61-53.

Turner started out in firm control of the game, holding a 31-27 halftime lead. But the Bears outscored the Tornadoes 34-22 in the second half to earn the victory.

Charlene Yellowtail led the Bears with 15 points. Loni Lamere and Latasha Wolfchild added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Turner got a game-high 22 points from Cheryl Cowan and 19 points from Ashley VanVoast in the losing effort.

Friday night also saw the Rocky Boy Morning Stars get back on the winning track with a hard-fought, 56-43 win over Chinook in Rocky Boy.

The Morning Stars raced out to a 17-6 first-quarter lead, and never trailed en route to the 13-point victory. The win snapped a two-game losing streak.

Rocky Boy got a game-high 21 points from Loni Belcourt, and Shaneen Rainingbird added 16 points. The Sugarbeeters got 12 points each from Dawn Kellam and Cheyenne Hamilton.

The North Star Knights were able to go on the road and pick up an important conference win Friday night in Hays. The Knights defeated Hays-Lodge Pole, 50-47.

Tasha Dyrland and Jodi Norman led the way for the Knights with 14 points apiece. Maia Aageson added 11 points. The Thunderbirds got 11 points from Twai Werk in the loss.

The Big Sandy Pioneers stepped out of conference on Friday night to host Denton.

Big Sandy broke open a five-point halftime lead with a 17-5 run in the third quarter to prevail 68-46.

The Pioneers were paced by the efforts of Kaci Herron and Jessica Amsbaugh. Herron scored a game-high 20 points and Amsbaugh chipped in with 12.

In District 2B action on Saturday night, the Harlem Wildcats lost another close game, this time to Plentywood.

Harlem clawed its way back into the game from a 10-3 first-quarter deficit, but Plentywood was too much down the stretch.

Harlem got a game-high 16 points from Leandra Thomas in the loss.

In Class C action Saturday night, the Chester/J-I Hawks tightened their grip on the District 10C standings with a 79-58 win in Heart Butte.

The middle of the game is where the Hawks did most of their damage, outscoring Heart Butte 46-23 in the second and third quarters.

Mary DeVries had another big night for the Hawks, scoring a game-high 27 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Jackie Alisch chipped in with 14 points.

In District 9C action, the first-place Big Sandy Pioneers went into Rocky Boy and came away with a 69-60 win over the Morning Stars.

Big Sandy used an 18-4 run in the second quarter to grab a comfortable 26-21 halftime lead. The Morning Stars roared back into the contest with a 22-point outburst in the third period. Still, the Pioneers were able to keep a lead and iced the game at the free-throw line.

Junior Shalayna Pearson scored 27 points to pace the Pioneers (9-1) in the victory. Rocky Boy (7-3) got 23 points from Loni Belcourt.

In Turner, the Chinook Sugarbeeters were able to bounce back from Friday's loss to Rocky Boy with a 55-53 win over the host Tornadoes.

The Beeters erased an 8-point third- quarter deficit via a 17-9 run in the final eight minutes of the game to earn the close victory.

Chinook (4-6) got 14 points from Crystal Roseberry, and Morgan Obie added 11 points. The Tornadoes (2-7) were led by Ashley VanVoast's 18 points and Cheryl Cowan's 16.

Saturday night also saw North Star keep its winning streak alive with a 70-43 thumping of Box Elder.

The Knights (8-2) were led by Tasha Dyrland's game-high 25 points. Megan Warren chipped in with 16 points. Box Elder (1-9) got 19 points from Tasha Parisian in the losing effort.

Hays-Lodge Pole earned a much-need win in nonconference action against Winifred. The T-Birds defeated the Red Raiders 54-48 in Hays.

Hays-Lodge Pole (6-5) got 16 points from Suzie Kirkaldie in the win.
