The Havre High wrestling team fell just short of capturing the team title this weekend at the Class A Duals in Libby. The Ponies ran into the Libby Loggers, who turned out to be much more than just a bump in the road in Havre's way.
Havre came into the tournament ranked second in the Class A coaches' poll. With Sidney being absent from the tournament, the Ponies became the favorite to walk away with the championship.
After rolling through Friday's pool competition with wins over Hamilton (63-21), Belgrade (70-15) and Hardin (78-18), the Ponies moved on to face off against Central A foe Lewistown. The Eagles did not present much of a problem for the Ponies as Havre cruised to a lopsided 62-24 win over the Eagles.
After taking care of business against the Eagles, the Ponies turned their attention to Eastern A foe Laurel and completely dominated the dual. The Ponies lost only one match on their way to a 65-12 thrashing of Laurel.
All the Ponies had to do to advance to the championship round was take care of the Miles City Cowboys. The Ponies got some wins early and jumped out to a big lead. They won all but four matches in the dual and rolled to a 55-22 domination of Miles City.
“We got some good performances out of some of our younger wrestlers such as Aaron Olson and Philip Sutherland,” HHS head coach Scott Filius said. “For most of the year now we have been trying to get those kids to compete in every match and this weekend they did that.”
The win set up a dual in the championship match against the Libby Loggers.
Havre, which was defeated by Libby for the championship a year ago, was looking for revenge, but fell to the Loggers by a score of 42-36.
Havre got wins from Ryan Shelstad at 98 pounds, Myles Mazurkiewicz at 105 pounds, Chad Ranes at 112 pounds and Ethan Hinebauch at 135 pounds.
Beau LaSalle won by a 10-2 decision at 130 pounds for the Ponies, and Evan Hinebauch won a hard-fought 7-5 decision at 171 pounds.
However, Havre just had too many losses to overtake the Loggers. Seven Havre wrestlers lost matches by pin, and Havre's Billy Wagner also lost a close, 6-5 decision to Loren Nelson at 119 pounds.
“We just got pounded by Libby. They put the boots to us,” Filius said. “I wish that I had an excuse but I don't. They were more physical and they just flat out beat us. We were just outwrestled.”
Still, the Ponies had a strong showing with the likes of Shelstad, Mazurkiewicz, LaSalle, Evan Hinebauch and Matt Schnittgen going undefeated. Wagner also had a strong tournament, including a win over Laurel's Zach Fox. The win avenged several losses to Fox over Wagner's first two years at Havre High. Nate Harada, Chad Ranes and Clint Bradbury were also strong for Havre on the weekend.
The Ponies will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Great Falls for duals against Great Falls High and CMR. Havre's final dual of the season will come on Saturday night when they host Class B powerhouse Conrad.
