Joyce was born March 29, 1919, to Charles and Gertrude (Lankford) Garner. The following spring, Joyce moved to Havre and lived in the apartment building that formerly housed Sacred Heart Hospital, where she attended nursing school. In later years, Joyce developed macular degeneration. She was an avid reader up to this point. Joyce loved cooking, shopping and animals. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always sent a card that was specially chosen for their individual special days, to express her true feelings about them.
