It was a disappointing day for the Havre High Track teams as both the HHS boys and girls failed to capture team titles at the Lions Invitational track meet on Saturday in Havre.

Instead, Havre's archrival, the Lewistown Eagles, came away with both team titles.

The Havre girls finished fourth with 55 points, and the Havre boys finished third with 71 points, just 10 points behind Lewistown.

The Eagles won the boys meet with 81 points, while Central A rival Browning finished second with 73 points. The Big Sandy boys finished fifth and Chester/J-I was 11th. North Star finished 14th, as did Harlem. The Chinook boys finished in 17th place.

The Lewistown girls dominated the meet with 90 points and Cascade was a distant second with 77 points. Class B Choteau finished third, two points ahead of Havre. Chester/J-I was fifth, and Big Sandy finished in sixth place. The Chinook girls finished in eighth place, and North Star was 10th.

“You are always disappointed when you don't win your home meet,” HHS head coach Mark West said. “But we were missing a lot of kids because of injury or other school activities, so that makes a bit of a difference. We just need to have our young kids step up, and they did a pretty good job of that, I thought. We just need to keep getting better and keep working hard.”

Even though the Ponies weren't able to come out on top, they did get some very solid individual performances, led by thrower Lena Suek, who took first place in both the javelin and the discus. The Ponies also got a first-place finish in the high jump from Casea Pollington. Pollington also tied for fourth place in the pole vault with fellow Pony Amanda Reinke.

“I thought that the girls had some highlights, like Lena winning both the discus and the javelin,” West said. “Lena has been real consistent so far this season. She has been doing a very good job for us.

“Casea Pollington also had a really good day,” he added. “She won the high jump and she placed in the pole vault. She did a really good job and it was really nice to see her do that well.”

The HHS girls also got solid performances from Kelsey West and Cammie West, who finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash. Distance runner Jaleesa Barthel finished in sixth place in both the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs for the Ponies. Heather Sinkowski finished fifth in the discus, and sophomore Tricia Samson took sixth in the 300-meter hurdles. The Ponies also finished third in the 1600-meter relay.

“We had some young kids step up and perform real well for us today,” West said “They were a little disappointed with their finish in the 400-meter relay, but they came back and finished third in the 1600-meter relay. Overall, I thought that with some of our main pieces missing the kids did a good job.”

On the boys side, Havre took first in both the 400-meter and 1600-meter relays, leading the way to a third-place finish overall.

Individually, the Ponies got good performances from Robert Brooks, who finished second in the 3200-meter run and fourth in the 1600-meter run, and Kyle Rummel, who finished fourth in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 100-meter dash. Senior Derek Verploegen finished second in the 200-meter dash for Havre

“The boys relays did really well, it was very exciting to see them win both,” West said. “I thought we also had some good performances from kids such as Robert Brooks. Robert had a really good day and he was very consistent. He probably wishes he could have competed a little better, but I was very pleased with his performance.

“Derek also was very consistent today,” he added. “Kyle Rummel also had a very good day. He competed very well.”

Other Ponies who placed on Saturday were Kyle Finneman, who finished sixth in the 200-meter dash, Ryan Horne, who placed fourth in the high jump, Cody McLean, who placed second in the pole vault, Evan Hinebauch, who finished third in the pole vault and Jack Teske, who also placed fourth in the long jump.

“Jack Teske had a good day for us,” West said. “He has really improved on his performance, and he just has to keep working on getting better. Ryan Horne also had a very solid day.”

The Ponies did struggle in some areas, as none of the boys were able to place in any of the throwing events, and they struggled in some of the jumping and sprinting events as well. But overall West thinks that his team is on the right track at this point in the season.

“Right now, we just need to keep getting better and just get into better track shape,” West said. “We have worked the kids pretty hard so far in the season, so maybe they haven't performed quite as well, but we are working towards peaking at the right time, which is at the end of the season, when it really counts.”
