The Bear way: honor, respect and responsibility.
Box Elder School held a field day on Thursday to help children learn the Bear way and to have a bit of good, clean fun.
“That's what we live by here - the Bear way,” Melanie Jenkins, a Box Elder health and physical education teacher, said during the games.
Kindergarten through fifth grade students participated in the games, which were run by Box Elder high school students.
The motto of the day's events was “If you had fun - you won,” and kids said they were having a ball.
Children participated in football tosses, relays and what Jenkins called a “cheap man's dunking booth,” where students soaked a sponge in a bucket and then threw it to one of the high school students who were sitting on a folding chair.
Sophomore Lacey St. Marks said her first time participating in the games was “interesting.”
“The kids are crazy - in a good way,” St. Marks said after she got soaked with thrown sponges.
At one of the stations, students had to waddle to a chair with a ballon between their knees and sit down, popping the balloon on the chair. Second-grade student Joesiah Taylor said the relay was fun but said when the balloon popped, it stung his bottom.He said he soon felt better and continued to participate in the relay.
About 20 different games were played by the students throughout the day. Students said they had fun getting wet, especially because of the warm weather.
Rowena McDowell of Box Elder watched her two granddaughters, second-grader Alicia and fifth-grader Mercedes play in the games.
“It's cool. The kids seem to be having a blast,” McDowell said.
She had two of her younger grandchidren with her as well.
“I've been too busy chasing the little ones to try any of the games out,” McDowell said.
