Former Havre High School golf star Nick Obie recently wrapped up a phenomenal senior season for the University of Redlands in California.
Obie finished third overall at the NCAA Division III national golf tournament, and guided the Bulldogs to a second-place finish in the tournament for a third consecutive year.
Individually, Obie finished the tournament with an eight-over-par 282. Obie finished one stroke out of second place and three strokes behind the national champion. Obie's best round of the tournament came on the second day when he fired a spectacular 67, which wound up being the second-best round of the tournament.
This year marked the third straight season in which Obie was named SCIAC player of the year, and this was his second straight year as an NCAA Division III First-Team All-American. Obie also earned second-team honors during his sophomore campaign at Redlands. Obie earned Academic All-American honors this year, and was also named to the All-West Team as one of the top golfers in the region.
In local golf news, after a week of poor weather conditions, things got back to normal at Beaver Creek Golf Course in Havre, as the men's league wrapped up its fourth week of play.
On Tuesday night, Shanty Bar and Stockman Bank tied for high team honors with 22 points. The Shanty is composed of Steve Johnston, Don Christopherson, Ed Barsanti and Butch Albertson. Stockman Bank is composed of Bruce Normandy, Murray Barkus, Dave Herman and Chuck Wimmer. Normandy also earned low gross for the night after shooting a 37.
On Wednesday night, Bear Paw Credit Union took home high team with a total of 23 points. BPCU is composed of Steve Brown, Ron Evanson, Al Vukasin and Brian Lillitvedt. Brett Gilman and Ben Erickson tied for low gross honors after both players fired rounds of 34. Gilman also earned low net with a 37.5.
In women's league action on Thursday night, the team of SM Construction took home high team honors. SM Construction is composed of Suzanne Light, Heather Wirt, Lorrie Keller and Nicki McLain. Carrie Kato earned low gross with a 47, and Shari Baltrusch was low net with a 35.5.
