The Montana All-Sports trophy is
something that represents pride and
achievement for a school’s total sports
year.
And Bozeman High School has had
a stranglehold on the trophy for some
time now. On Monday, Bozeman captured
its record-tying eighth All-Sports
trophy and its third in the last four
years. Billings Senior captured the
trophy last year.
Billings West was second in this
year’s race, and Kalispell, which has
also won the trophy eight times, finished
third.
Meanwhile, Havre High which is
always in the hunt for the trophy, and
always in the race for the top Class A
school, finished fifth overall, and second
among Class A schools. A dominant
spring by Whitefish pushed the
Bulldogs into fourth place, finishing
the school year with 89 points, two
points ahead of HHS.
Huntley Project finished just
behind Havre in sixth place, followed
by Cut Bank. Missoula Loyola was
eighth and Billings Senior was ninth.
Thanks to a sweep during the Class
C track and field championships, and
a stellar season in girls basketball,
Big Sandy was the top Class C school
in points this season, finishing in a tie
for 10th place overall. Big Sandy
scored 60 points which was good
enough to tie with Billings Skyview.
Big Sandy’s track and field state
championships helped the Pioneers
make the biggest leap of the spring.
Heading into the spring sports season,
Big Sandy was in 52nd place overall.
In the close Class A race, Whitefish
was actually the All-Sports leader
going into the spring season. The
Bulldogs captured state championships
in volleyball and boys golf
during the fall. This spring Whitefish
earned a state title in boys track and
field and finished second in girls tennis.
Havre scored 21 points in the
spring, but that was not enough to
hold off the Bulldogs. The Ponies were
in third place going into the spring
thanks to a state championship in
girls swimming, a second-place finish
in volleyball and a second-place finish
in wrestling. This spring the Ponies
earned a state championship in girls
tennis and also got a second in boys
tennis.
Bozeman’s 128.5 points came by
way of state titles in boys tennis this
spring, as well as boys and girls swimming
in the winter and girls basketball.
The Hawks also brought home
seven second-place trophies from state
meets this year.
Billings West also made a big leap
this spring thanks to a sweep of the
Class AA track and field championships,
which was good for 50 points.
West also earned a share of the boys
state tennis title, and this fall the
Bears captured the Class AA state
football championship.
There were 98 schools which scored
in the all-sports competition, including
all 13 Class AA schools, 22 Class A
schools, 28 in Class B and 35 in Class
C.
