Saturday was more of the same for the Havre High tennis teams - both the HHS boys and HHS girls cruised to dominating victories in all three of Havre's duals at the Conrad Invitational in Conrad.

The Havre High boys opened the tournament with an easy 6-1 win over the Lewistown Eagles. Seniors Chase Castloo and Scott Miller and freshman Shane Kemmer all were victorious in singles competition for the Ponies.

In doubles action, Havre got victories from the teams of Ryan Kinholt and David Zentmire, Mason Sheppard and Todd Roe and Tim McLean and Brad Hanson. The Ponies' only loss in the dual came when junior Billy Wagner was upset by Cameron McCleery of Lewistown, 6-3.

The HHS girls also got off to a great start, as the Ponies dominated Lewistown, 6-1. Havre was led by singles victories from Katie Mariani, Hope Hedges and Jocelyn Chagnon. In doubles, the teams of Kari Gorder and Kristi Hollingshead, Alex Lipp and Karissa Olson and Samantha Boucher and Angie Maxwell all won.

In their second match, the Ponies continued their winning ways as the boys knocked off Cut Bank 6-1. They got singles wins from Todd Roe and Shane Kemmer. In the doubles competition, Havre got wins from Castloo and Wagner and Kinholt and Zentmire. The Ponies also got a win from the team of McLean and Hanson. The lone defeat for the Ponies came when Steven Paulson of Cut Bank defeated Mason Sheppard of Havre 6-2.

The girls also continued their winning ways with a 7-0 victory over Cut Bank led by singles winners Mariani, Hedges, Christen Kittelson and Boucher. Cut Bank forfeited two of the doubles matches and Gorder and Hollingshead also picked up an easy victory.

“I thought in some areas we got off to a pretty slow start against Lewistown,” HHS head coach George Ferguson said. “We didn't play some of the same kids we faced last week in Cut Bank as well this time around and that was a concern to me.

“But in the dual against Cut Bank, we picked up the pace a little bit and I started to see some improvement,” he added. “I thought on the boys side Todd Roe and Shane Kemmer both picked up impressive victories against two pretty solid players. And the girls pretty much dominated that dual.”

The HHS boys finished off the day in style by defeating host Conrad in dominating fashion, 7-0. Castloo, Wagner, Miller and Kemmer all earned easy singles victories.

In doubles, the teams of Kinholt and Sheppard and Roe and Zentmire earned victories. McLean and Hanson also won in doubles competition for the Ponies to close out the Conrad dual.

“The results were a little lopsided against Conrad because they were missing some key players this weekend,” Ferguson said. “But that dual was the best we played all day. All of our boys really took care of business and all the boys looked really sharp in every match in that dual.”

The girls also finished things off in dominating fashion, as they trampled the Conrad Cowgirls, 7-0. They were led in singles play by victories from Mariani, Hedges, Chagnon and Kittelson.

In doubles, Havre got wins from the teams of Gorder and Hollingshead, Lipp and Olson and Boucher and Maxwell.

“I was especially pleased with how our girls played as the day went on,” Ferguson said. “Because we were missing some kids, Hope Hedges had to bump up and play the No. 2 singles spot and she did very well. I think she improved every time she stepped on the court.

“In doubles, all three of our teams looked pretty sharp,” Ferguson added. “Kari Gorder and Kristi Hollingshead earned two very impressive wins over Lewistown's top team and a pretty good Cut Bank team. They really played well on Saturday. I also think that Alexa Lipp and Karissa Olson looked very good. They haven't been playing together very long, but they are coming along nicely.”

Havre High will now prepare to host the Havre Invitational tennis tournament Saturday. The Havre invite will get under way at 8 a.m. at the Bill Vaughey Memorial Tennis Courts.

“We're very excited about hosting our tournament this year,” Ferguson said. “We are looking forward to playing at home in front of our fans and on our own courts.”
