What was supposed to be the Rocky Boy Invitational track meet quickly turned into the Kourtney Danreuther show.
Danreuther, a Big Sandy freshman, put on an outstanding athletic display Wednesday afternoon at the Havre Middle School Track in the 2006 Rocky Boy Invitational taking first place in the 100-meter dash, the 110-meter hurdles, the 200-meter dash, the 300-meter hurdles and the long jump. It was Danreuther's second five-event sweep of the young season.
Not only did Danreuther win five events, she won them with relative ease and in near record breaking fashion.
“She is a great athlete,” Big Sandy head coach Roy Lackner said. “I mean her times in the 100, 200, and the hurdles are the best in the state right now and they are better than the time that won state last year. Some of her times are even good enough to be state records, but you have to do it at state for it to be a record.
“For a freshman to come in and do that is just amazing,” He added. “And she still is getting better. She keeps improving her times and she is long jumping over 17 feet. She is going to accomplish a lot as long as she stays healthy.”
Sparked by Danreuther, the Big Sandy girls rolled to victory with 102 points overall. Chester/J-I came in second with 84 points and Dutton-Brady came in a distant third with 48 points. North Star finished eighth with 29 points, the Havre High junior varsity team finished 10th with 26 points, Box Elder ended up in 15th place with six points and Turner came in at 16th place with four points.
Besides Danreuther, the Pioneers had a number of other girls who contributed to the team's first-place finish. Kate Vosen took home first-place honors in the high jump, freshman Laci Keller won the discus, Moran Darlington placed in both the 1600-meter run and the 800-meter run, and Desirae O'Neil placed in the high jump for the Pioneers. The Pioneers also managed a second-place finish in the 1600-meter relay.
“The kids competed really hard today,” Lackner said. “We have a lot of young kids and they did a good job of coming out and performing well.”
C/J-I's second-place finish was led in large part by Brianne Wolfe. She captured both the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run. Wolfe also teamed with Brittney Kolstad, Lyndsey Oraw and Molly Brown to win the 1600-meter relay.
The Hawks also got solid performances from Daina Kolstad, who finished second in the 100-meter dash, the 100-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles, and Keyla Briese, who placed in both the long jump and the 1600-meter run.
The Big Sandy boys followed in the girls' footsteps, as the Pioneers also took home the team title with 93 points. North Star finished in second place with 61 points, followed by the Havre High J.V. team, which finished in third with 46 points. Chester/J-I came in 10th with 25 points, Chinook finished in 12th place with eight points, Hays-Lodge Pole ended up in 13th with seven points and Rocky Boy finished 18th with one point.
The team title was Big Sandy's second of the season. The Pioneers also captured the season-opening Cal Wearley Invitational two weeks ago in Havre.
Leading the way for the Pioneers was Karl Osterman, who finished first in both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash as well as second in the 400-meter dash.
Another big contributor for the Pioneers was Darin Ray, who captured both the 800-meter run and the 1600-meter run. Justin Willis added a first-place finish in the 400-meter dash and the Pioneers also claimed first place in the 400-meter relay and second place in the 1600-meter relay.
“We had some good performances out of our boys today,” Lackner said. “Karl Osterman had a very good day and so did Darin Ray. We have a pretty young team, but there is definitely some talent there.”
Other top individual performances included Cody Donoven of North Star taking home first place in the javelin and Robert Brooks of Havre grabbing first in the 3200-meter run.
