Former Havre High standout Steve Heberly is breaking new ground as a junior on the Montana State University track and field team.
On Saturday at the MSU Invitational in Bozeman, Heberly set the MSU school record in the 100 meter finals with a 10.67 clocking. The mark was .01 seconds better than Chuck Ladd's 21-year old school record.
“It's not something I set out to do,” Heberly said of his 100-meter record. “Breaking records and all of that stuff comes with the territory of running well.
“It is more important to me that I am running well and I just try to run with the competition,” he added. “All of the rest of the stuff just comes with it.”
Aside from the record-breaking 100-meter final, Heberly also won the 200 meters on Saturday with a blazing fast time of 21.38. Heberly has broken the 200-meter school record twice already this season.
Heberly has now firmly established himself as the Big Sky Conference's premier sprinter, having already qualified for the conference championships in both the 100 and 200 meters. He now has his sights set on qualifying for the NCAA Midwest Regional where he would have a chance at making the NCAA outdoor championships.
“The regional marks right now are around 21.19 in the 200 and 10.5 in the 100 and I am getting pretty close to those,” Heberly said. “It would be really nice if I could get to those marks, so that is what I am shooting for right now.”
Heberly is in his third season at MSU. While at Havre High he set and still holds the Class A state record in the 100 meters. He won the 100, 200 and 400-meter state championships as a senior at the Class A state track meet in Missoula in 2003.
Heberly and the Bobcats have two more regular season meets on their schedule. The Big Sky Championships are on May 10-13 in Ogden, Utah, and the Midwest Regionals are on May 26-27.
