Havre Daily News
It was a beautiful spring day at the start of the Chinook Invitational track and field meet, but by mid-day the sky was covered with threatening clouds.
Oon the cold dim afternoon, one star did manage to shine through the clouds. That star was Big Sandy's Kourtney Danreuther.
Danreuther was an instant star when she burst onto the high school track scene a little over a month ago and with every event her legend grows.
On Saturday at the Havre Middle School Track, the Chinook Invitational was no different, as Danreuther once again showed why she is quickly ascending into a class all by herself.
Danreuther took home five first-place finishes on Saturday highlighted by a three-and-a-half-second victory in the 300-meter hurdles. She also took home first place in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump.
“She is a special athlete,” Chinook head coach Mark Roseberry said. “It is amazing to watch her. It would be tough trying to choose what five events to put her in because someone like her could probably win just about any event she entered into. She is that good. “She can do things as a freshman that juniors and seniors have been trying to do for three or four years,” Roseberry added “It's all just very natural for her. She has such a great stride and she just has great natural instincts. All long as she continues to work hard and stay healthy there is no telling how good she can become.”
While Danreuther stole the spotlight, she was not the only girl to put on an impressive performance. Brianne Wolfe of Chester/J-I also had quite a day, winning both the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run as well as being the anchor on C/J-I's first-place team in the 1600-meter relay.
Crystal Roseberry of Chinook was another girl who had an outstanding individual performance on Saturday. Roseberry took first-place honors in both the triple jump and the 3200-meter run, and she also finished second in the long jump behind Danreuther.
“Crystal did a really nice job for our team,” Roseberry said. “She did really well in both the triple jump and the long jump. She also took first place in the 3200 even though she doesn't normally do that event.
“She usually does the 200-meter dash, but she missed the event, so she just jumped into the 3200,” he added. “It was nice to see her jump in and compete in an event she isn't familiar with.”
On the boys side of things, the Big Sandy Pioneers dominated the competition with eight first-place finishes and many other top-six finishes on the afternoon.
Kyle Danreuther capped off a great day in the Danreuther family with first-place finishes in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles as well as a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash.
Karl Osterman also had a solid individual performance for the Pioneers taking home first place in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. Osterman also finished second in the 100-meter dash. Other first-place finishes for the Pioneers included Laurence Jappe in the long jump and Darin Ray in the 1600-meter run. The Pioneers also finished first in the 400-meter relay.
Other top individual performances included Curtis Darrah of Malta, who finished first in the 800-meter run, third in the 400-meter dash and fourth in the 100-meter dash. Cody Donoven had a solid day for North Star grabbing first place in the javelin and finishing in fifth place in the 100-meter dash.
“I thought that our kids did a good job of coming out and competing hard,” Roseberry said. “We are just really young and we are trying to develop and get stronger. If you look at a team like Big Sandy, both their boys and girls, they don't have a ton of kids on their team, but every single kid that shows up scores points. We have some kids that will make it out of districts and probably even divisionals, but at this point we just don't have a lot of depth and that is something that will only come after we get some more experience.”
