Most of the 2006 high school track and field season, the North Star Knights boys and girls track teams have had to take a back seat somewhat to District 9C powerhouse Big Sandy.

On Saturday at the Jason Groseclose Memorial track meet in Rudyard, neither North Star teams took a back seat to anyone. The North Star boys romped to 276 team points en route to an easy victory. The North Star girls had even more success, scoring 290 points on Saturday.

In the boys meet, Turner finished second with 103 points followed by Hays-Lodge Pole, Chinook, Rocky Boy and Box Elder.

Individually, the Knights picked up gold medals in 10 events. Josh Beaudry, Adam Chvilicek, Alex Frey, Branden Melby and Shane Rice all earned multiple first-place finishes for the Knights.

Beaudry's day included a win in the 100-meter dash and the triple jump, as well as a second-place finish in the 200-meters. Chvilicek won the 200-meter race and the pole vault, while Frey captured the 400- and 800-meter races.

Rice also had a stellar day for the Knights, winning both the 1600- and 3200-meter races as well as the discus. Melby captured both hurdle events and finished second in the javelin, fourth in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump.

Hays-Lodge Pole's Lance Brockie had a strong day in the throws, winning the shot put. Brockie finished second in the discus and third in the javelin. Teammate Ron Williamson captured the high jump title.

On the girls side, the Knights won 11 individual events, highlighted by Megan Warren's domination in the 100 and 200 meters. Warren also captured the triple jump and finished second in the long jump. Teammate Tia Pester finished second to Warren in both sprint events and captured the pole vault title.

While Warren and others had a fine day on Saturday, the meet belonged to North Star sophomore Natasha Dyrland. She captured five events, highlighted by back-to-back wins in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Dyrland also edged out Pester in the high jump and captured both the discus and shot put titles. Teammate Courtney Wendland won the javelin, finishing just ahead of Dyrland.

North Star's gold medal parade was rounded out by Kendra Donoven's win in the 400 meters and Justine Beaudry's victory in the 800.

Chinook, which finished second in the meet, got wins from Danielle Gard in both the 1600-meter and 3200-meter races. Krista Johnson won the 300-meter hurdles and long jump for the Beeters, and Chinook also captured the 400-meter relay.

With little rest, all of the District 9C teams will gather in Havre Wednesday afternoon for the District 9C track meet at the Havre Middle School track.
